Champlin Park's Theisen shoots out the lights
His Champlin Park teammates have seen what a pure shooter Scott Theisen is. Opponents and fans recently got to see that shooting prowess too.The junior supersub hit 9 of 14 three-pointers on the way to a 34-point game against Centennial.For an encore, Theisen made 11 of 15 threes and scored 33 points against Elk River in the Rebels' next game.For the season, Theisen is averaging 12 points per game and making 47 percent of his three-point attempts.

Inside The Lines:
The word is traveling just as fast as the 3's are dropping. Scott Theisen of the Champlin Park Rebels is lighting it up from the arch! The Jr sharp shooter is on a roll. In his last 2 games the Jr has hit 20 of 29 threes and averaged 33 points. Having seen his last two games, some of these 3's should have been counted as 4's! His latest barrage has moved him within 1 point in total points for the team for the season. He is currently the #1 three point shooter in the Northwest Suburban League and shooting 90% from free throw line and averaging 12 points a game. The buzz at the Elk River game in which he had eleven 3's, was he tied the Minnesota State High School record! More importantly, he has helped bring the Rebels up to 3rd place in the league. The team only trails Osseo and Maple Grove in the league, having lost to them both. The Rebels hit the floor again on Friday at home against Andover in which a win would bring their record to 7-7.

Here's an early scouting report for Andover as it prepares for a game Friday at Champlin Park: Be sure to guard Scott Theisen as closely as possible.
Theisen, a junior for Champlin Park, has been setting a blistering pace from behind the three-point line recently. He had nine three-pointers Friday when Champlin Park beat Centennial 83-49; on Tuesday, he topped that with 11 in an 84-55 victory over Elk River 84-55. He is a combined 20-for-29 (69 percent) from behind the line in those two games.
Theisen said he has been using a shooting machine in recent practices, helping him get his shot going. Mostly, though, it's the oldest tonic in the book that has him red hot.
"It's just a lot of confidence," he said. "It's a great feeling."
Theisen, a junior, was a post player in youth basketball until, as he said, "Everybody passed me up in height and I became a guard." A recent growth spurt has him pushing 6-4. He hasn't received any recruiting interest yet, but that could change if he keeps draining threes at his recent pace.
"Yeah, hopefully," he said.
The Czar:
Centennial upsets Coon Rapids for their 1st conference win and Champlin Park goes on the road and beats Elk River by 29. Scott Theisen after hitting 9 of 14 3s vs Centennial, hit 11 of 15 3s vs Elk River, WOW! Champlin Park improves to 4-3 and has 3rd place in the NW Suburban (via tiebreak with Coon Rapids). Those teams are 3 games behind Osseo who won what will probably be their last major test until the 5AAAA section final with a 6 pt win at Maple Grove.

With leading scorer Emeka Okafor out for last Thursday's Northwest Suburban Conference match-up with Centennial, Champlin Park boys basketball coach Mark Tuchscherer had plenty of reasons to be concerned.That was until Scott Theisen started firing.The junior guard came off the bench for the Rebels and could hardly miss. By the time he was done shooting, the line read like this: 34 points, 9-of-14 on three-point attempts, five steals, four rebounds, two assists and a partridge in a pair tree."He played unreal," said Tuchscherer. "With Okafor out, we needed someone to step up, and Theisen did that. He was amazing."The outburst led the Rebels to what turned out to be a relatively easy 83-49 win over Centennial. And after losing a tough game to Blaine 73-70 Jan. 18, and getting blown-out by second-ranked Osseo Jan. 22, Champlin Park got exactly what it as looking for against the Cougars."I thought we responded really well," Tuchscherer said. "We came out with a lot of fire and a lot of intensity from the beginning and all the way to the end. We've put some good halves together this year, and even against Blaine I thought we played about a fourth of the game, and that was the last 7 minutes. We came storming back, but it was too little too late. I thought we put a full game together against Centennial. Granted, they are a 2-12 team, so we have to take that in stride, but still, to come back after getting blown out, it was a good sign."Of course, the idea now is to do it again.The Rebels will have three chances to do that this week. They were scheduled to play at Elk River Jan. 29, at home vs. Andover Feb. 1 and then at Cambridge-Isanti Feb. 2.A perfect run through the week would move Champlin Park's record back up and over the .500 mark, but it won't be easy.Elk River and Cambridge-Isanti had already combined to win 18 games, and Andover runs at you in waves, Tuchscherer said."Andover has a nice team," he said. "When we went and scouted them, they would play five, and then put in a new fresh five, and then a new fresh five in. They kind of platoon. They don't really have a lot of size, but they look to get in your face on defense. They are really aggressive and try to push the ball; it will be a tough game."The Rebels hope to have Okafor back by then. He missed the Centennial game with a strained MCL, and he's having a monster year - 13.4 points and 12.6 rebounds a game - so his presence will be needed."He's having a huge year," Tuchscherer said. "He's a game changer. He keeps people out of the lane. And [Calvin] Nolte's really sparked us since his suspension, getting 13.5 points and about six boards a game."Since Nolte's return, and after Theisen went off against Centennial, the Rebels now have three players averaging at least 10 points a game.Additionally, Kyle Zimmerman, Jasper Duberry, Rex Whitehead and Nate Dudgeon have also proven they could score on any given night, giving Champlin Park the type of balance that the Rebels think can keep them be competitive the rest of the way."I really think the best teams a lot of times in high school are the balanced teams," Tuchscherer said. "Look at Osseo right now, and they are one of the best teams out there, and they are very balanced. I always talk about making the extra pass. If you continue to move the ball and not worry about who's scoring, but if your team is scoring, that's the key and anytime you have pretty good balanced scoring, you are probably going to win quite a few of those games."

Jason Melillo brings us the story of Champlin Park high school student-athletes and brothers, Zach and Jasper Duberry. The two are up and coming Rebel athletes; Zach is a freshmen goaltender for the Champlin Park JV hockey team while Jasper is a sophomore starting varsity guard in basketball.

Rebel boy cagers win once in 3 tries

The Champlin Park boys basketball team played three times last week, winning once.The Rebels topped Park Center 75-60, and had four players finish in double figures in the win. Nate Dudgeon led the way with 20 points. Rex Whitehead scored 13, Emeka Okafor added 12 and Kyle Zimmerman had 10.Champlin Park lost its only other conference match-up of the week, falling at home to Maple Grove 76-70. Okafor scored 18 points in the loss, and Jasper Duberry added 16 and Calvin Nolte 13.Then, last Saturday, the Rebels dropped an overtime heartbreaker 58-56 at White Bear Lake. Nolte led the way with 14 points in that loss. Scott Theisen scored 12 and Okafor finished off a productive week with 11 more.This week, Champlin Park was scheduled to play host to Coon Rapids Jan. 15, before traveling to Blaine Jan. 18.
