High-scoring Cameron dismissed from Kenosha Christian Life

One of the state’s top scoring wing guards has been dismissed from school and his eligibility status for the 2009-10 season remains in doubt.

Joshua Cameron, a 6-foot-1 senior, was dismissed from Kenosha Christian Life School last Friday and is now attending Racine Park.

“Josh will be petitioning the WIAA to be allowed to play this season,” Kenosha Christian Life School coach Steve Powell said. “This is all I can say about the situation. Josh broke school policies and was dismissed.”

Ranked No. 20 among state seniors by WisSports.net, Cameron averaged 24.0 points per game as a junior after averaging 20.0 ppg as a sophomore when he attended Parkway Christian School in Oak Creek.

An athletic, strong and skilled guard who can get on a roll from the perimeter or get to the basket and finish in the lane, Cameron has a very quick first step toward the basket. He earned first-team all-league honors in the Southern Division of the Midwest Classic Conference as a junior and played on the grassroots scene last summer for the Wisconsin Force.

Powell said recently Cameron was receiving recruiting interest from a number of scholarship schools, including Ball State, Charleston, Columbia, North Dakota and SIU-Edwardsville.

If the WIAA grants eligibility for Cameron at Park, he’ll be joining a veteran team picked by many to win the Southeast Conference championship.

Coach Jim Betker returns three starters from a club that went 18-4 in senior guards Issaih Bridges (5-8) and Tre Edwards (6-0), along with senior forward Stanley McKenzie (6-4). In addition, the Panthers return five additional senior lettermen and welcome talented newcomers off a 19-1 junior varsity team and an 18-1 freshmen squad.

Gauging a Coach's Interest

Colleges and universities from all over will hound you with letters and calls to choose their school as the place to extend your athletic career. But you can't commit just because they came calling. Keeping in mind that you'll spend the next four years of your life there, articulate to yourself exactly what you'd like out of your college experience; then decide which school can best fulfill your wish list. This means assessing yourself, and the coach you could potentially play for, to the nth degree.

Self-Assessment
Setting lofty athletic goals is important, but would you be happy if you just make the squad? Say you're a 5'11, 210-pound offensive guard who runs a 5.1 40, and a MAC school offers you a partial scholly. Do you think you'll get enough playing time to make you truly happy with that team? Or, would you rather accept a full scholarship from a D-II, and get the opportunity to start every game by your sophomore season?

Using the school's website or media guide, measure your physical tools against a team's current roster. Check out each player's position, hometown, age, height, weight and athletic profile, including their high school accomplishments [All- State, All-Conference, State Champs, etc.]. This will help you gauge the level of ability the team recruits.

Physical Attributes: What is your size compared to others at your position?
Position: Find out how many people on the squad play your position to know whom you'll compete against.
Geography: Does the coach recruit nationally, or just go after in-state talent?
Transfers: Is the roster littered with JUCO transfers? They're generally more experienced and more prepared to play than recent high school graduates.

The High School Athlete's Guide to College Sports: How to Market Yourself to the School of Your Dreams recommends asking yourself these questions to assess your ability level:

• How have you performed at major events, such as showcases, tournaments, meets and state or national championships?
• Do you know of any college athletes with abilities similar to yours?
• Do you possess impressive physical attributes? A coach might recruit you if he believes that you'll develop into a great athlete within the next two or three years.
• Do you possess the leadership skills necessary to compete in college?
• Do you play for competitive summer or club leagues?

Coach 's Interest
No athlete wants to be at a school where he isn't wanted, and sometimes coaches-just to leave you with a positive feeling or because they don't want you to go elsewhere-will mention the opportunity to walk on. Make sure you know that the coach truly believes in your athletic ability before picking his school. And when one coach tells you to walk on and another offers you a scholly, the coach offering you money obviously believes more in your ability.

Choosing between offers is just one situation when you'll need to gauge each coach's interest and commitment to you. Being mailed questionnaires, getting calls from coaches and receiving texts are a few others. Note the various ways a coach contacts you and what each one means. A general rule of thumb: the more a coach personally contacts you, the more serious he is.

The start of the Minnetonka fall league signals that the regular season can't be far away. Week 1 at Minnetonka showcased a mix of stars and emerging underclassmen. One of the state's top centers carried his team to a comeback victory. Saturday featured a second week of games in the Breakdown fall league.

Saturday's action at the Breakdown league was depleted due to ACT testing. Apple Valley's Thomas Schalk along with Kyle Zimmerman and Josh Pella of Champlin Park were notable players missing. Add in preparation for the football playoffs and many players were missing. This was very apparent in the Forest Lake vs Chaska game that finished with a 26-22 Chaska win. Also during that session, Spring Lake Park handled Apple Valley 65-23. Apple Valley also missing star point guard Tyus Jones due to football. St. Paul Johnson defeated Champlin Park 41-30. Maranatha Christian Academy sophomore point guard Darian Pittman was impressive for the Mustangs. They defeated Richfield by 13 and Holy Angels by 11.

Champlin Park's explosive offense and home field advantage sparked the Rebels to a 5-2 win over visiting Maple Grove 5-2 in a Section boys' soccer final Friday, Oct. 23.

The game matched two teams that endured different difficulties this season. The sixth-seeded Crimson got off to a slow start and won only two of its first 12 games. They ten went on a late 5-1 run and beat defending state champion Osseo to reach the section final. The fourth-seeded Rebels opened the season winning nine of their first 10 games. Then injuries hit and they lost six of their final seven regular season contests. But they got healthy in time for sections and they beat Spring Lake Park 2-1, blanked top-seeded Centennial 2-0 before defeating the Crimson in the championship.

Maple Grove came out strong and applied early pressure but the Rebels defense held and goalie Michael McNelly came up with big saves. The Rebels finally settled in and forced a corner kick when a hard shot by senior captain John Levenick required MG goalie Mike Leszko to make a fine save. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball popped loose in front of the goal and senior midfielder Ayub Baker booted it home to give CP a 1-0 halftime lead.

2009-10 Northwest Suburban Preview

This is the 8th preview in my metro area season previews series. In this installment, I take a look at the Northwest Suburban Conference. To access all of the previews in the series, view the season preview page here.

The league has some teams taking major hits due to graduation. Do those teams rebuild or reload? Will that mean that Osseo still wins the conference crown? Will Elk River rebound from a down season? With all the star power gone, what players step up as stars in the league?

Champlin Park Rebels (2008 season 17-11, 12-6 Conference)
The Rebels look to be the major threat to Osseo's throne. Jasper Duberry returns at the point. Kyle Zimmerman and Josh Pella are a dynamic forward duo. Zimmerman is undersized but the lefty is surprisingly effective inside and he can also step out to 3 and shoot it. Pella is an athletic wing who can do a bit of everything. Jordan Reibling is a shooter and Dillon Hager is a defensive minded backup point guard. Junior TJ Okafor could have a breakout year inside. Him and D'Andre Williamson will man the center spot.

Fall Leagues Session 1 review

So what did we learn from the opening session of fall leagues?

Champlin Park was an impressive 8-0 at the MBA league. With their 3 stars (Duberry, Zimmerman and Pella) and Matt Sellers, the Rebels took out top teams De La Salle, Duluth East, Minnehaha and Henry Sibley.

De La Salle is going to be absolutely scary good this season. Outside of the Champlin Park game, they were dominant despite playing without point guard Walter Frankin. Their role players were rock solid and there are more talented youngsters coming up through the program.

MBA Fall League Week 4 Results ... Rebels Close Out The MBA League Perfect ... They Run The Table & Go 8-0

Champlin Park 62 - Maple Grove 18
Yes, the final score is correct.
The Rebels who wanted no part of their conference foes, jump out to a 30-0 lead with 1 minute left in the 1st half. Maple Grove gets a basket and a free throw later, as the Rebels go into the half up an unimaginable 32-3.

The Rebels spend most of the 2nd half watching the clock. 6'10 center Matt Sellers finishes with 14 points with Rebling adding 13 and Zimmermann 10.

Champlin Park 60 - Duluth East 51
The Rebels and the Greyhounds entered today's action with a potential championship game of undefeated teams. If both teams won their 4pm games, the fireworks would go off at 6pm, however De Lasalle knocks off the Greyhounds in their 4pm match up.

The Rebels play unisprired defense and fall behind the 1st half 33-24 as Starkes is a one man team. Having to deal with what seems like one sided officiating this one becomes interesting as coach Duberry picks up a technical foul as the Rebels pick up ten team fouls before you can blink.

The 2nd half starts with the teams trading baskets, then the Rebels go into locked down mode and tie the game at 39 with 14 minutes left. Duluth was able to hang in there behinds Starkes putting up numbers but you can tell that this one was starting to go the Rebels way as there defensive pressure builds and you can see Duluth wearing down.

Duluth hangs around until the 5 minute mark when the Rebels go on another run, this one is 14 - 7 and seem to have this one in hand. The Rebels give up only 18 points in the 2nd half to double Duluth's 2nd half production 36-18.

Jasper Duberry led the Rebels with 18 points after having to sit most of the 1st half in foul trouble. Kyle Zimmermann had his way around the basket slashing his way to 16 points as Jordan Reibling chipped in 12.

The Rebels go undefeated (8-0) in the league knocking off all the leagues top teams (De LaSalle, Minnehaha, Minnesota Select, Henry Sibley and Duluth) in route to their league championship.

On what was his last regular season performance on a field covered in his own tracks, Champlin Park senior Brandon Marquardt went out and played for his parents.

The running back tied a career high with five touchdowns, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark on his final carry in a night that ended with the Rebels running past Park Center 42-20, improving to 5-2 on the year.

In all, Marquardt finished with 174 yards on 15 carries, and piled up 91 yards receiving to go with his those five scores, further solidifying his spot as arguably the best running back in Minnesota.

"He's as good as they get," said Park Center head coach Rufus Bess, whose team fell to 1-6 with the loss. "He's a heck of a ball player. Great agility, great athleticism, and he does it week in and week out. We had designs to contain him, but he just made plays.

"In retrospect, Marquardt probably could have made more plays, a fact Champlin Park head coach Mike Korton lamented on after the game.

MBA Fall League Week 3

Another quality evening of games at the MBA fall league on Saturday. De La Salle, Champlin Park, Minnehaha, Henry Sibley and Duluth East all playing quality games during the evening session. Close games, physical play and fun head to head battles highlighted the day.

Champlin Park took on Henry Sibley in the final highlight game of the day. Mike Rostampour picks up 3 quick fouls and he goes to the bench at the 13:30 mark. But the Rebels can't take advantage as Sibley goes on a 11-1 run over the next 9 minutes. Jordan Jackson with 3 specatular blocks to wipe away 3 breakaway chances and keep Sibley on top. The Rebels recover and finish the half on a 13-2 run over the last 4:45 of the half. 25-21 Champlin Park at the half.

Rostampour back in to start the half and he scores a pair of quick hoops before picking up his fourth foul with 11 minutes left. The Rebels can't take advantage of that and Rostampour stays in the game. Critical moment with 2 minutes left and the Rebels leading by 2. Jasper Duberry returns from a rest and drives to the rim. That draws the final foul on Rostampour and he's gone. Duberry makes 1 of 2 free throws for a 3 point lead. After Jackson and Duberry trade baskets, Jordan Reibling knocks down a transition triple with 55 seconds remaining. That dagger gives the Rebels a 49-43 lead and the game is out of reach. Champlin Park wins 53-43. Sibley falls to a very surprising 0-5 in the league. Duberry finishes with 16 points to lead Champlin Park. Coach Ernest Duberry employed a pressing and trapping style to turn the game in the Rebels favor and keep Sibley from getting into a rhythm.

Football: Champlin Park bottles up Elks 34-0

Champlin Park's defense overwhelmed the Elk River offense and the Rebels posted a 34-0 victory over the Elks on Friday evening.

The Rebels (4-2) held the Elks to 54 yards rushing and 12 passing. The Elks (1-5) had only five first downs and punted six times.

MBA Fall League Week 3 Results ... Rebels Keep Rolling Along, Pick Up 2 More Wins To Get To 6-0

After sleep walking to a 22-20 halftime lead, the Rebels awaken and lock down in the 2nd half and cruise in for the win. Pella led the way with 18 points with Reibling knocking down four 3's to finish with 13 (of course his free throw came on a made 3). Brandon Davis and Matt Sellers both had 8 points apiece. Good game for the non-starters to get some floor time. Josh Pratt had 7 points for St Anthony.

The Rebels will face St Anthony again in the Olive Garden Christmas tournament December 28th.

In one of the feature games of the day the Rebels fall behind 17-12 in the first half do to horrible shooting. Once the Rebels stepped up the defensive pressure the game started to swing there way ... 25-21 Rebels at the half.

Sibley who was playing without their 7 foot center Jake Kreuser do to an injury had to exclusively depend on Mike Rostampour on the inside who picked up 3 fouls in the 1st half as Jordan Jackson was forced into a number of turnovers as he had 7 points at the half.

AGAIN, the Rebels flex their 2nd half muscles with their pressure defense and traps causing a number of turnovers for the Sibley back court. Rostampour who was constantly attacked by Zimmermann, Pella and Sellers on the offensive end last as long as he can before fouling out with 14 points with the game not yet decided.

Duberry led the Rebels with 16 points (2 deep run cutting 3's) that where nicely and timely spread out thru the game with Zimmermann adding 10 (5 for 5 from the free throw line). Sellers who added 8 points with some nice put backs around the basket while showing off a nice hook shot in both games today.

Game ball to Jordan Reibling (2 for 8 from the arch for 6 points) for his relentless perimeter defense that got the Rebels going in the 2nd half. It was one of his LONG 3's that sent the Rebels on the run that finally put Sibley away. Fitting enough it was his pass that led to the game ending dunk by Pella that finished theRebels 10-2 close out run. Jackson who scored 4 points in the 2nd half to finish with 11 points, had 3 crowd raising spectacular block shots for Sibley.

Rebels take out frustration on Elk River, 34-0; Win leaves Rebels at 4-2 with two games left

Fresh off a pair of defeats unlike any Mike Korton has endured in his seven years at Champlin Park, the Rebels put together their most complete effort of the season to get back on track Friday, Oct. 9, in Elk River.

Brandon Marquardt scored three touchdowns, pushing his season total to 18, and a revamped Champlin Park defense pitched its first shutout of the season in a 34-0 blanking of the Elks.

"It was a good night for us," said Korton, whose team improved to 4-2 with the win. "And we needed it."

The weekend of Nov. 9-11, 2007, was a great time to be a Badger. On that Friday, the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team opened a home series with rival North Dakota, while the nationally ranked UW volleyball team welcomed Michigan. On Saturday, Bucky hosted the football Wolverines, and Sunday brought the men's basketball regular-season home opener. It was a perfect storm of scheduling that challenged Justin Doherty, who handled the athletic department's day-to-day communications at the time, to somehow capture it all. His idea: dispatch a single staffer armed only with a camera, a computer and the capacity to seek out a good time. "I said, 'Just go be a fan, and cover the weekend for our web site,'" recalls Doherty, who currently serves as the university's assistant athletic director for external relations. "The guy was so energized by that concept. It empowered him."

Rebels shocked in final minute

It was rainy, it was windy and it was miserable, but it was also a jubilant Homecoming at Champlin Park Friday, Oct. 2.

Then, in all of 60 seconds, Andover spoiled it.

The Huskies got two touchdowns from Chase Vasquez in the final moments Friday to escape out of Champlin with a 19-18 Northwest Suburban Conference victory and remain a perfect 5-0 and in first place in league play.

Vasquez landed on his owns teammate's fumble in the endzone with just under a minute to play to pull Andover to within five points, then after a successful onside kick, the Huskies went right back down the field, ending the game on a 9-yard pass from Tyler Finnes to Vasquez as time ran out on he game clock.

Vasquez's heroics trumped what was another dominating night for Champlin Park back Brandon Marquardt.

He scored on three runs, including a 66-yard touchdown with 4:31 to play that put the Rebels up 18-7.

In all, Marquardt padded his Mr. Football resume with 166 yards on the ground and another 50 that came on just two catches.

Through five games, he's now accounted for 1,102 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns.

Friday, he was mostly on his own. Quarterback Steven Harvey struggled in the elements, throwing four interceptions. His defense picked off Finnes five times, but they couldn't get in front of that final pass to Vasquez in what was the night's most critical play.

Champlin Park (3-2) will play at Elk River (1-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, before closing out the season with a home game against Park Center Oct. 14 and a trip to Osseo Oct. 20.

The year was 2003 and Henry Sibley High School was continuing on with being an average high school basketball program. And then Trevor Mbakwe showed up in Mendota Heights from Atlanta, Georgia. That moment was the momentous first that got Sibley basketball rolling. And things didn’t stop from there.

A year later a hungry basketball coach by the name of Tom Dasovich came over from Columbia Heights to direct the Warriors. Also, a pair of basketball families was also in the program that helped ignite the team and they were the Halvorsens and the Leslies. Dasovich would then hire assistant coach Lernell James and this core group set things in motion and now the Sibley Warriors are one of the top programs in the state of Minnesota.

Late in a second half that saw Andover do nothing right, the Huskies did the improbable.

Trailing 18-7 with less than five minutes remaining in the second half, Andover got two touchdowns from Chase Vasquez, the second one coming on a 9-yard pass from Tyler Finnes with no time left on the clock to beat Champlin Park 19-18 Friday night.

Vasquez's first touchdown was a stroke of luck. He recovered a fumble by teammate Jason Schneider in the end zone. Then the Huskies recovered an onside kick with 56.6 seconds to go, giving them the ball on their 49-yard line and one more chance to win the game.
