  The Rebels have figured out a way to make their season even more interesting as it lost it’s 3rd straight game in which, UNBELIEVABLY 2 of the 3 losses have come to teams that they had previously defeated by an AVERAGE OF 37 POINTS.
  
  The Rebels played a lackluster game last night and deserved to lose again. They played with no passion or enthusiasm and more importantly no direction. Each team tried there best not to take command of the game and shockingly the Rebels went into the locker room at the half up 23-21. Each team played a little bit better (not by much) in the 2nd half as the Elks converted a number of put backs and long range 3’s. The shining star for the Rebels was Calvin Nolte (19 points) as he kept the team in the game. I believe he made 8 straight free throws down the stretch because he was to big inside for the Elks; needless to say the Rebels never explored this mismatch. With the Elks up 1 point, Jack Gavin (14 points) missed a free throw with 4 seconds left. Zerrick Fuller pushed the ball up court and missed a desperation 3 point shot from half court to end the game.

Once which was a bright, inspiring and promising season has become one of doubt. When the Rebels went on their winning streak they would have 3-5 runs per game in which they ran the court and moved the ball very well and outscored their opponents on average 4 to 1. The team enjoyed the freedom of getting up and down the court with little or no direction and were able to spread the court and use their athleticism and player smarts.

Teams have now figured out EVERY play that they run and when the Rebels get into a ½ court situation their chance of scoring is little to none. The team CONSISTENTLY runs a play they call colors which starts off with a pass to the right wing, well EVERYONE knows after they run it 3 times what to do to stop it. It is the most unproductive play I have ever seen. The team has played 23 games and my guess is it has run this play 25 times a game (23 x 25 = 575 possessions), out of these 575 possessions I believe they have MAYBE scored on 25 of these possessions. My math tells me that this play has a success rate of less than 5%. When the coach calls this play not only do the players flinch but the spectators simultaneously put their heads in the hands. This action is worth the price of admission.

Calvin ... GOOD GAME!

The Rebels face two teams next week (Anoka and Andover) that they have previously EASILY defeated and the way things are going, a split would be an accomplishment.

Around The League: Osseo wins their 16th league game over Maple Grove which keeps the Crimson 1 game back on the Rebels. However, Blaine’s win over Park Center coupled with Elk River’s win, now forces a 3 way tie for them.

Osseo Wins Conference

The Osseo Orioles captured their second consecutive Northwest Suburban Conference championship with a hard fought 76-67 victory over the Rebels from Champlin Park. It was not without some anxious moments for the Orioles, however. With Osseo leading by 12 points with 3:25 left in the first half, Champlin Park went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead in half just before halftime.The second half was a back and forth battle as Osseo would increase their to 11 only to have the Rebels chip away as the trailed only by 1 with 2:23 remaining the game. Osseo then converted 6 free throws and a couple of field goals to win by 9.Leading scorers for Osseo were Ryan Spading with 22, Sam Dower with 16 and Carrington Tankson with 15.Champlin Park had 4 players in double figures: Emeka Okafor and Calvin Nolte each had 14, Scott Theisen (nephew of Osseo coach Tim Theisen) had 13, and Jasper Duberry had 10.

Maple Grove's 82-64 win over Centennial moves them to within 1 game of the Rebels for 2nd place. The Rebels face Elk River Friday who were upset at ParkCenter 79-72.

After a slow start, the Champlin Park boys basketball team is gaining momentum.The Rebels are alone in second place in the Northwest Suburban Conference with a 10-3 league mark after beating Coon Rapids Tuesday. They've now won eight of their past nine games overall after a sluggish start to the season. Champlin Park is three games behind Osseo in the conference standings, so catching the Orioles is highly unlikely, but second place in a good league isn't a bad goal to shoot for.

Champlin Park 75 - Coon Rapids 66 ___>12-8

OKAFOR CLOSES THE DOOR ON THE CARDS
The Cards had a 12 point lead fade away in the second half, as the Champlin Park Rebels outside shooters chipped away and get the lead late in the game. Catch all the exciting action on CTN Sports Channel 15.

Let's get to the game ...
Here we go again … let’s dig ourselves another hole so that we can watch ourselves climb out of it. This seems to be the new theme for the Rebels. In their defense last night, the Rebels watched shot after shot go half way down and come out and were lucky to be down only five points 37-32 at the half.

The Rebels who started the second half with cold shooting and turnovers (13 for the game) which helped the Cardinals build a 12 point lead, got a deep 3 from Calvin Nolte (who had a great game considering some questionable calls that kept him in foul trouble) that seemed to ignite the offense. Jasper Duberry and Ty Jesinoski sandwiched a couple of break out baskets around a 3 point bomb by Theisen (6 for 10 on 3's) and the Rebels were back in the game and forced Coon Rapids to call a timeout. After the timeout (5:04 left in the game) the Rebels stepped up their defense and shot after shot began to fall for them. Kyle Zimmermann knocked down 2 free throws and Theisen hit a deep 3 from the top of the key with 2 minutes left to put the Rebels up for good. The Rebels outscored Coon Rapids 43-29 in the second half.

The Rebels pushed their winning streak to 5 games and have won 8 of their last 9 while sending their second place conference record to 10-3. The Rebels travel to Centennial on Friday who they beat pretty easily earlier in the season, however, the Cougars upset Elk River last night 81-78 behind 22 points by sophomore Tony Gerding.

PARENT NIGHT
Finding a way … after jumping out to a 10 point 1st half lead, the Rebels get into foul trouble and send their starters to the bench and watch Blaine go on a 14-2 run to take a 34-32 lead into the half. Ty Jesinoski (8 points) had some big baskets to keep the Rebels in the game. The 2nd half started with both teams trading baskets as Blaine maintained a 6-8 point lead behind the shooting of Giddings (18) and Kreklow (14). The Bengals were able to get some easy baskets by rotating their taller guards to the block for easy baskets.

The Rebels went into a 1-3-1 zone which caused Blaine’s offense to slow down as Fuller (17 points including a couple of and1’s) continually beat their bigger guards to the basket. With Okafor controlling the boards (12 rebounds, 5 offensive) the Rebels started to push the ball and beat the taller Bengals down the floor. Duberry who picked up his 3rd foul 30 seconds into the 2nd half, had sat out most of the game do to foul trouble, leaked out for a couple of break out baskets with his second one tying the game with about 3 minutes left and swinging the momentum to the Rebels. Duberry scored 6 of the Rebels last 10 points. The Rebels defense stepped up and shut the Bengals down for the win and improved their 2nd place conference record to 9-3.

In other conference action, Elk River defeated a fast fading Maple Grove 75-63. The Rebels next game is at Coon Rapids Tuesday Febraury 19th @ 7pm. CTN Sports (Channel 15) will be televising the game live and replaying it at 12midnight.

Sophomore Standouts for Tuesday, February 12
Champlin Park v Park Center Kyle Zimmerman (CP) 18 points. Jasper Duberry (CP) 13 points. CP continues its strong play, humbling Park Center, the sophs are playing much bigger roles in the Rebels recent success.

Blaine with a 94-57 blowout of Centennial to win their 3rd in a row.

They may be getting hot at the right time.
Champlin Park has now won 6 out of 7 (after losing 4 of 5) to improve to 8-3 in league play after blowing out Park Center at PC. The 1 loss was a 2 pt OT loss at 7AAAA contender Cambridge-Isanti. They're 1 game ahead of Maple Grove.

Minnesota Lynx Honor 8 More Teams with the "Lynx Team of the Week" Awards

Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx are proud to announce the eight high schools that have earned the distinction of receiving the "Lynx Team of the Week" awards, which includes results through Feb. 7.

This is the 10th consecutive week that the Minnesota Lynx have recognized one girls team and one boys team in each of the state's four classes of competition. The program will continue every week throughout the high school regular season.

Class AAAA

Champlin Park is the Class AAAA Lynx Team of the Week following a pair of wins sandwiched around a two-point overtime loss in the week. The week included wins over Andover (67-60) on Feb. 1 and Anoka (79-67) on Feb. 6. The heartbreaking loss came at the hands of Cambridge-Isanti (74-76 OT). After suffering four losses in a five-game stretch in January to fall to 4-7, the Rebels have turned things around with four wins in their last five contests to climb back to .500 (8-8).

Each team will receive a Certificate of Merit, courtesy of the Minnesota Lynx, along with a spotlight on Lynxbasketball.com. All 104 teams will also be invited to a Lynx game during the 10th Anniversary season this summer.

Inside The Lines announces that they will be training and coaching a group of the team's next year players in a spring league and team camp. The 12 man team includes Brad Thompson, D'Andre Williamson, Jasper Duberry, Kyle Zimmermann, Rakim Finney-Anim, Scott Theisen, Tanner Brust, Teddy Gibson, TJ Okafor, Tyler Boland, Tyler Munneke and Zach Kadlec.

Williamson, Duberry and Zimmermann will be playing on the clubs national touring team (TNL) as well.

Champlin Park 88 - Park Center 53 / 10-8

Rebels in a blow out ... push winning streak to 3.

In a game in which the Rebels score exactly 44 points each half, they blow out Park Center 88- 53. The team seemed to be strictly about business as they put this one away early and quickly as the score was 44-27 at the half. The Rebels had five players score in double digits with Theisen leading the way with 19. Zimmermann, who had a huge 1st half finished with 18 as Duberry score most of his 13 in the 2nd half. Nolte and Okafor added 10 apiece. The Rebels improved their 2nd place conference record to 8-3 and are now 10-8 overall. They're 1 game ahead of Maple Grove. They have now won 6 out of 7 (after losing 4 of 5) with their one loss being a 2 pt OT loss at 7AAAA contender Cambridge-Isanti. The Rebels hit the court again this Friday at home (Parent Night) against Blaine as they try to avenge an earlier 3 point lost to the Bengals. The Bengals blew out Centennial 94-57 as Giddings and Rodriguez scored 23 points
each.

Northwest Suburban:
Maple Grove loses to Blaine and Champlin Park this week. They're on a 4 game conference slide and are now in 3rd place at 6-4. Blaine is now my pick to win section 7AAAA with Kyle Kreklow and Dylan Rodriguez. Champlin Park with 2 wins to move up to 7-3 and 2nd place. Coon Rapids with back to back home losses to Park Center and Blaine puts them at 5-5 in the league with Blaine and Elk River.

Champlin Park 70 - Maple Grove 67 / 9-8

The Battle For 2nd Place!
After watching Jordan Nelson score on the Crimson’s first 4 of 6 possessions, the Rebels quickly fell behind and looked as if they had no answer for the big man. Falling behind by as much as 14 points, the Rebels were able to go into the locker room only down by 11, 39-28.

The game, which was poorly officiated from the opening tip, started to take a turn in the Rebels favor as the 2nd half started. The Rebels came out blazing, getting baskets inside (Emeka Okafor, 11 points) and out (Scott Theisen, 15 points). Kyle Zimmermann (12 points) who was not a factor in the 1st half came to life with a number of slashing cuts to the basket as he and Calvin Nolte (9 points) got the Crimson’s bigs in foul trouble, the two shot 18 free throws for the game. The Crimson’s leading scorer and rebounder, Josh Pedretti, who was allowed to use a hook move all game long could not convert inside and spent most of the 2nd half on the bench in foul trouble before eventually fouling out.

Though the Rebels scored 42 points in the 2nd half, it was their defense that got them back in the game and eventually won it for them. Guards Zerrick Fuller (12 points, 5 assists) and Jasper Duberry (4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists) kept the Crimson’s Alex Geisonhoff (6 points) in check before he fouled out with a couple of minutes to go. In the teams earlier meeting this year, Geisenhoff scored 25 points.

The win pushed the Rebels into sole possession of 2nd place in the conference at 7-3, as well as put their record on the positive side (9-8) for the first time this year.

Champlin Park 79 - Anoka 67 / 8-8

Zerrick Fuller has a great floor game as the Rebels defeat Anoka 79-67 to reach the 500 mark (8-8-) and go 6-3 in the conference. Fuller led the way with 10 points, 5 assist and 3 rebounds. The Rebels had 3 other players score in double digits as well, Theisen 24 (4 more 3's), Nolte 13 and Zimmermann finished with 11 as well as adding 11 boards for his first double double of his career. The Rebels where up 35-29 at the half and pretty much kept a 4-8 point lead thru out the 2nd half do to the outside shooting of Anoka's Bernie Ward (20 points) and Eric Birch (10 points). Anoka started the game in zone defenses which caused the Rebels to show some patience on offense as well as not let them get out and run. When transition opportunities where available, Fuller converted as well as Duberry and Jesinoski who added 7 points apiece.

The win brought the Rebels record to 500 (8-8) for the second time this year. The Rebels now get ready for their conference showdown rematch on Friday with Maple Grove (6-3) who lost to Blaine last night for their 3rd straight conference lost. A Rebel win would give them sole possession of 2nd place!

Wednesday: Columbia Heights at Cooper. Cooper comes in mad after an upset loss at Irondale. The Hylanders come in high (no pun intended) after a home upset of Spring Lake Park. Always fun to watch Rodney Williams, Jr (1st time I'll see him in person this season) but Jacob Thomas of CH is on the star watch as well. Park Center at Coon Rapids and Anoka at Champlin Park are a couple of interesting NW Suburban games. DLS at SPA might be worth it just for the Davanni's pizza.

Champlin Park's Theisen redefines 'en fuego'; Junior nails 20 three's in back-to-back wins by Nick Clark

Scott Theisen strolled into the Champlin Park High School gym last week dressed in a plain white T-shirt, presumably to cool off the rest of his body.

The junior guard for the Rebels boys basketball team had just spent his previous two games as hot as any shooter in recent state history. He went 9-of-14 on three-point shots in a 83-49 win over Centennial, then followed that up 11-for-15 performance from beyond the arc in an 84-55 win over Elk River.

Combined, he scored 67 points in the two wins, 60 of which came on three-pointers.

The state record for three-pointers in a game is 20, which was set by Minnesota Transition's Cash Eggleston in February of 2005. Ellsworth's Aaron Van Der Stoep nailed 12 in February of 2006, and Theisen's sharp shooting against Elk River tied him with eight different players for the third most three-point shots made in a game in state history.

Can you say en fuego (Spanish for on fire)?

"The team is passing the ball really well and trying to find me on the court, so that's been nice," Theisen said. "Hopefully I can keep it up."

Theisen credits the recent outburst to some work he's been doing with a shooting machine, which consists of a large net under the hoop that fires the ball back out to the shooter.

Whatever the case, it's working.

"It's really helped a lot," Theisen said. "I've been using it before practice to help fix my shot. [The machine] is really cool, you can set the speed and everything."

Needless to say, head coach Mark Tuchscherer likes the results.

"It adds quite a bit to what we can do," Tuchscherer said. "Both [Calvin] Nolte and [Emeka] Okafor can play the center position really nicely, so as long as we keep moving the ball well as a team, its going to stretch it out quite a bit, because if they can take our post away, hopefully we can kick it out and vice versa."

The Rebels followed up their wins over Centennial and Elk River with a 67-60 home win over Andover last Friday, and a 76-74 overtime loss at Cambridge-Isanti last Saturday. Theisen cooled down somewhat against the Huskies, hitting just 2-of-9 threes and scoring 11 points. He was back at it against the Bluejackets, however, when he connected on 3-of-5 threes and led the Rebels with 17 points. Champlin Park now sits at 7-8 overall on the year and 5-3 in the Northwest Suburban Conference.

"The team's been playing well," Theisen said. "We're having a lot of fun."

Champlin Park junior Scott Theisen has been getting some attention for his three point shooting in the Preps message board the last week or so and I thought I would give Champlin Head Coach Mark Tuchscherer a call and get some background. Scott is the brother of former CP standout Jenny Theisen and the nephew of Osseo Head Coach Tim Theisen. It's a basketball family affair. Champlin Park 74 - Cambridge-Isanti 76 / 7-8

The team comes out strong after having played a tough game the night before and take a 38-35 lead into the half. Nolte & Okafor (12 points & 12 rebounds) are too big for the Cambridge team and can score at will inside. However, Nolte misses a number of bunnies and does not finish around the rim (4 for 10 for 14 points). Zimmermann comes up big around the basket and finishes everything (5 for 6, only miss was when he was fouled and knocks down a 3) for 14 points.

The Rebels enjoy a comfortable 8 point lead thru out the 2nd half by pushing the ball up court. Duberry (6 assist) continually draws and dishes to Theisen (three 3’s and scores 17 points). The team could have easily blown this one wide open by outleting (nw) rebounds off of Cambridge missed 3’s, but the Rebels bigs consistently looked backwards on rebounds and the wings brought the ball up court with their heads down missing wide open break outs by Fuller and Duberry who were releasing and running the court.

Around the 4-minute mark confusion set in, the team slows down, stops playing aggressively and looks confused at if they should continue to push the ball or hold the ball and run their offense which caused a number of unforced turnovers. They lose their momentum and Cambridge’s Mathson and Johnson start knocking down shots. Duberry and Theisen have to make crucial free throws to keep Cambridge at bay. Johnson then knocks down a deep 3 (after missing 2 straight) from the arch to tie the game at 67 to send it into OT. In OT Cambridge stays hot as the Rebels try to get going again but it looks to be too late as the team is out of sync now. With 7 seconds, left Cambridge misses a jump shot but gets the rebound and puts it in for the win at the buzzer.

Champlin Park 67 - Andover 60 / 7-7

It was a big North Suburban matchup Friday night in Champlin. The Rebels hosted the Andover Huskies. In the end, it was the home team Rebels winning, 67-60.
