Rebels go down swinging in section semi's; Overtime loss to Cooper ends season
BY NICK CLARK
PHOTO BY NICK CLARK ** Champlin Park head basketball coach Mark Tuchscherer talked to his team during a timeout during the Class 4A, Section 5 semifinals March 17 at Rogers High School. Cooper beat the Rebels 82-73 that night.
They filled out of the locker room one-by-one, each wearing the same look that formed on their respective faces moments before the end of the first of two Class 4A, Section 5 semifinals March 17 at Rogers High School.
And that look, which could easily be likened to that of someone getting blasted upside the head with a two-by-four, might still be there today.
Heading into the postseason, Champlin Park wasn't much more than an afterthought in a section that included two of the state's five best teams.
Yeah, there was a chance the Rebels would be in the semifinals, but that would be it.
"Your right," said head coach Mark Tuchscherer said. "Outside of our locker room, I don't think anyone really believed in us."
Not anymore.
Champlin Park's season ended that night at Rogers H.S. in the Section 5 semi's, but it did so in a way hardly a soul not associated with the team thought possible.
The fourth-seeded Rebels took top seed Cooper to overtime, and though they did eventually lose 82-73, Champlin Park went down swinging.
"I'd say we played pretty darn hard," Tuchscherer said. "We played smart and very discipline. We kind of took a little of their game and went at them with their own medicine there, and I think it paid off. We just kind of ran out of gas."
No question the tank was full early. The Rebels had Cooper on the ropes from the start. They scored the games first seven points, and would lead by as much as eight points before the night was over. They also only trailed twice in the first half, which included a two-point deficit at the break that lasted all of 27 seconds into the second.
Scott Theisen drilled a three on Champlin Park's first possession of the second to give the Rebels their lead right back, and another Theisen three pushed that lead to four with 13:04 to play.
From there, the Rebels never trailed again in regulation.
But they didn't lead at the end either, as Cooper erased a late five-point deficit, closing out regulation on a 6-1 run, and then carried it over into the extra time, when the Hawks outscored Champlin Park 14-5 to move into the section final.
"Nobody else did, but we knew we could play with them," said Theisen, a senior who hit seven three's and finished with a team-best 25 points in his final high school game.
"Me and a couple teammates got together and watched the tape. We felt like our zones could contain them and they couldn't beat us from the outside, and for the most part it worked. We just made a couple too many turnovers, they got some easy buckets and down the stretch we were a little defensive. They got it done."
Before the opening tip-off, Tuchscherer said the trapping within that zone defense would be the key. The hope was to limit future Gopher Rodney Williams Jr. to as little as possible. That worked, as Williams scored nine points and was virtually invisible the entire night, but it was a pick-your-poison-type scheme, and Joe Bright turned into Champlin Park's killer.
Bright led all scorers with 33 points, most of which came from the paint or at the free throw line.
"Our focus was to stop Rodney and make other people beat us," Theisen said. "Joe Bright did that. He had a lot of easy buckets."
Theisen made a lot of buckets as well, though none of them were easy. He stepped back to knock down at least three of his three's from NBA range, and the rest came with at least one hand in his face, and often times two.
"Unbelievable player," Tuchscherer said. "He said yesterday in practice he was going to shoot a couple NBA three's - that is how much confidence he had - and he hit them."
Theisen said he'd be doing that next year at the college level, it is just a matter of where.
"I'm still undecided," he said. "I have a lot of things to think about and talk to my family about."
Ty Munneke is the only other senior on Champlin Park's roster. He scored just two points in the loss to Cooper, but that wasn't his role.
"He's our defensive stopper," Tuchscherer said. "He had a fantastic game tonight."
So did the rest of the Rebels, who finished the season with a 17-11 overall record, which was the second best in school history.
Junior Kyle Zimmerman dumped in 21 points in the loss to Cooper and will be back next year, when the Rebels hope the roles are reversed.
"We went up against one of the better teams in the state, they had all five starters returning from last year's state tournament team," Tuchscherer said. "I am real proud of our boys. We gave it a great effort and we believed we could win tonight. We came up short, but we'll be back."

Another Top Seed Misses Out On A State Trip
Osseo Boys' Basketball Springs Its Speed Trap
By JOHN MILLEA, Star Tribune
Last update: March 21, 2009 - 2:09 AM
Osseo led by 16 points with less than 12 minutes to play, but Cooper went on a 23-11 run -- sparked by 14 points from Kenquane Brown -- to pull within four with 1:38 remaining. But the Orioles, who didn't make a field goal in the final 3:22, closed out the victory by hitting seven of 10 foul shots. For the game, Osseo made 11 of 14 free throws and Cooper went 9-for-20.
Gophers signee Rodney Williams didn't score for Cooper (27-2) until the final minute of the first half and finished with six points. Osseo's Sam Dower, a 6-9 forward who has signed with Gonzaga, led the Orioles (27-2) with 18 points, and Nick Djerf added 16. Brown led Cooper with 22 points, and Joe Bright had 19.
Osseo, champion of the Northwest Suburban Conference, lost only to Henry Sibley and Maple Grove during the regular season and will take a 14-game winning streak into the state tournament. The Orioles' last trip to state was in 2003.
The brackets for the 4A and 3A state tournaments will be announced Sunday. The top four teams will be seeded, with their quarterfinal opponents determined by blind draw. The tournament will begin Wednesday.

Tuesday's boys' basketball roundup
SECTION 5 SEMIFINALS:
No. 4-ranked Cooper flirted with disaster. Senior guard Freddie Burton opened overtime with a three-pointer and the Hawks scored 14 points in the extra session to knock off Champlin Park 82-73. Kenquane Brown made two free throws with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 68 as Cooper overcame a seven-point deficit in the final five minutes. Senior forward Joe Bright led the Hawks with 33 points. Scott Theisen made seven three-pointers en route to a 25-point outing for the Rebels.

Section 5AAAA Semifinal Game Tape
Section 5AAAA Semifinal Cooper 82 - Champlin Park 73 Cooper, Osseo win in section hoops Many fans and players at Cooper and Osseo have been thinking about the possibility of their outstanding boys basketball teams matching up in the postseason pretty much since the season started.Someone forgot to tell Champlin Park. The Rebels, the No. 4 seed in Section 5AAAA, had the lead for most of the night against top seed Cooper before falling in overtime 82-73 in the first semifinal game in the section. Scott Theisen bombed in seven three pointers and scored 25 points for Champlin Park, while Kyle Zimmerman had 21. Cooper stepped up its defense late and fought back to gain the win, outscoring the Rebels 14-5 in overtime. Joe Bright had 33 for the Hawks, with Kenquane Brown chipping in 21 points and Freddie Burton 14. Osseo advances past Roseville No. 2 seed Osseo was in control most of the way against No. 6 seed Roseville, but the Raiders stayed close enough to make it interesting. Gonzaga recruit Sam Dower had 26 to lead Osseo, while Bucknell recruit Mike Muscala had 23 for Roseville in a matchup of talented 6'9" players. Nick Djerf added 13 and Bobby Fischer 11 for Osseo. You can watch the Cooper-Champlin Park game Wednesday at 8:30 and 11 p.m. Wednesday on Comcast Channel 12 in the northwest suburbs and at http://www.twelve.tv/. The Osseo-Roseville game airs Thursday at 8:30 and 11 p.m. The section final, Osseo vs. Cooper, is Friday at 7 p.m. at Rogers High School. CP 73 - Cooper 82 in OT
In overtime, the Hawks win the tip and senior guard Freddie Burton knocks down a three and the Hawks convert on their first two possessions to take a commanding 5 point lead, which is their largest of the game. The Rebels miss another shot and Cooper gets another basket on a break out to put it out of reach as they outscore the Rebels 14-5 in the extra period to come away with the win.
The Rebels who jumped out to 7-0 lead and led thru out the first period gave up a 6-0 run to end the half as the Hawks go into the locker room up 35-33. The Rebels who where able to contain Rodney Williams (9 points) all night with their 2-3 zone, had no answer for Joe Bright who had a season high 33 points. The first half was the deep 3 point shooting of Scott Theisen (25 points) vs the inside scoring of Bright.
The Rebels start the 2nd half in demanding fashion and retake the lead behind some 3 point bombs by Theisen and some slivery moves by Kyle Zimmermann (21 points) who eventually sends Bright to the bench with four fouls.
With the Rebels up 6 points with about five minutes left in the game, they call a timeout and return to the game and it appears they have taken the air out of the ball. The Rebels who had built their lead by playing uptempo appear to start running clock killing plays and don't convert on three straight possessions and before you can blink we have a tied ball game. What was very confusing about this move is that the Hawks where completely out of gas at this point and looked ready to take the knockout punch.
My hat goes off to the Hawks for being able to gut this one out and come away with the win and their second consecutive section championship game against Osseo will be one to watch. Game balls or should I say Gut Balls for Kyle Zimmermann (broken nose) and Jasper Duberry (jammed ankle) for even playing in this one. Both where injured in the teams last game against Centennial last Wednesday and had not practiced until yesterday. Zimmermann attacked the basket all game and made an assortment of baskets in the lane, most against the tough Bright. Duberry was able to handle the Hawks constant ball and full court pressure all game and was instrumental in getting the Rebels into their sets and managed the games tempo very well.
Scott Theisen what a season and high school career ending game. Theisen, who will be deeply missed next year, knocked down some 3's tonight (7 for the game) which where well pass the NBA 3 point line and had the crowd going "wow". We wish him the BEST of luck next year at the college level.
The Rebels end their season with a 17-11 record.

CP 74 - Centennial 56
The Rebels moved the ball really well and continued to make the extra pass to wide open shooters and knocked down a number of 3's thru out the game.
The Cougars started the 2nd half with a small run that the Rebels answered as the Cougars could not get within 16 points. Great job by the Rebel front line holding the Cougar front line tandem of Adams and Peterson to 13 points.
Theisen
Both teams cleared their benches with about 3 minutes to go. Scott Theisen playing in his final game at Champlin Park led the Rebels with 20 points.
