The Rebels (15-4 / 10-1) continue conference play on Friday February 12th as they travel to Blaine to take on the Bengals (4-14 / 2-9).


The Rebels defeated the Bengals at home 61(15 points from Davis) -39 (16 points from Zach Romashko) back on January 14th as four Rebel starters reached double digits to combine for 46 points, nine Rebels scored.

The Bengals are currently on a two game losing streak and have one victory in their last nine games. The Bengals are led by junior post sensation Zach Romashko who is averaging a huge 18 points a game. Senior guard Jesse Briggity is their other double digit scorer at 10 points a game. Keep an eye on the very athletic sophomore wing Duke Anywanu as well.

Conference co-leader Osseo is at home against Centennial.

The Rebels who are averaging a conference leading 71 points a game were moved up to the #2 spot in the Class 4A State Rankings today by the Minnesota Basketball News. The Rebels who have four starters averaging double digits are on an eight game winning streak and have won 14 of their last 16 games.

Davis's Threes Get The Rebels Back On Track

The Rebels come out poised and look like they are ready to bring their 2 game losing streak to an end. The Rebels spread the floor and move the ball very well as all five starters score as Davis knocks down a couple of 3’s. Blaine’s junior post player Zach Romashko is pretty much unstoppable as his play around the basket and two 3 pointers from sophomore Duke Anywanu keeps Blaine close, 28-22 Rebels at the half.

The Rebels step up their defensive pressure the 2nd half and go on a couple of runs that force Blaine timeouts. Davis knocks down a couple more 3’s (4 for 5 for the game) and the route is on. The Rebels looked very efficient and focused as four starters hit double digits.

After a road conference lost to Coon Rapids in OT on Tuesday, the Rebels are back home to play the Blaine Bengals and will be trying to snap a two game losing streak.

The Bengals (3-7) are led by junior Zach Romashko who is averaging 20 points a game along with senior guard Jesse Briggity’s 14 points a game.

The Bengals, who defeated Coon Rapids 57-43 on January 8th, make this an interesting game.

Another Top Seed Misses Out On A State Trip

Game #138, a personal record, as I make the trip to Elk River for the 7AAAA final between Blaine and Forest Lake. Forest Lake with the big regular season win but Blaine is hot right now. Big Forest Lake student section (and a disappointing Blaine one). Gotta love the spelling of "Go Rangers" on the front row of students (1 letter per shirt). We even have the band directors having a discussion as both bands are playing at the same time. No police required for that one though. All of the likely 4 seeds at state in the building taking this one in as they have the chance to draw the winner of this game.

Dylan Rodriguez: This kid can score points!

By Jason Olson Of the Sportsweek Staff One game after setting the new single-game scoring record, Blaine senior Dylan Rodriguez came up short this past Tuesday night (Feb. 17) at Champlin Park. So did his team by the score ofI 83-70.

Rodriguez was one of three starters to foul out in this Northwest Suburban game. His night ended with nine minutes remaining and a modest 16 points. Rodriguez and the Bengals were riding high after an emotional and season-high 81-63 win over rival Anoka the preceding Friday (Feb. 13). “We can’t score in the high 70s and 80s and expect to win,” he said. “We’re one of the two-three lowest scoring teams in the conference but we are one of the better defensive teams.”

Not only was it senior night and a game with community bragging rights on the line, but the UMD-bound senior forward set a new single game scoring high of 42 points. He passed Ben Kreklow’s 41 points (set against Maple Grove in 2006) when he hit a soft floater. “Dylan is a great kid who really deserves it,” said coach Ted Critchley. “It was a big decision to leave him in there, instead of pulling him out of the game, but once we found out he had 37 points we made the decision to get him the ball.” Critchley said he called a time out to let the mostly junior varsity players on the court know of the situation. “We told them to look for Dylan,” he said. “Kids passed up lay ups and they wanted him to see him reach the milestone as much as him.” Blaine's Dylan Rodriguez will continue playing basketball next season at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Photo by Jason Olson. Rodriguez was confident his senior season was going to be a big one. He’s averaging 19.5 points per game and has scored at least 20 points 10 times. Rodriguez credits the time he put in during the off season at 43 hoops, an AAU program for preparing him for his final prep season. “They really helped round out my game,” he said about the off-season program organized by former Timberwolf Chris Carr. “They really helped me learn how to put the ball on the ground and polish my post game.” He’s now looking forward to joining the UMD Bulldogs basketball team on a full scholarship next fall. As far as a major, he’s still trying to make a decision between engineering and business. After losing 10-of-11 games between December and January, the schedule for the remainder of the season was looking rather grim. But lately Blaine has found a resurgence, winners of five of six before Tuesday’s Northwest Suburban Conference loss at Champlin Park. “We definitely have a history, or something,” he said about weak starts followed by very strong finishes. “Or its just me.” Blaine (9-12) lost by two points to the Rebels on Jan. 13, but Rodriguez scored 34 points in the loss. Blaine struggled to keep up Tuesday with the Champlin’s up-tempo offense down the stretch forcing the Bengals to foul. The result was an over abundance of free throws for the Rebels as the visiting Bengals committed 31 fouls (32 including Critchley’s technical foul in the second half, with the game out of reach). With five games left in the regular season, Critchley said the race for section seedings is still wide open, at least for the second through eighth spots” “Forest Lake is the only clear cut No. 1 team in the section,” he said. “It’s going to be a dog fight with everyone and it will come down to finding the right situations and match ups....”

CP 83 - Blaine 70

The Rebels jump on the Bengals and cruise to a 53-35 halftime lead. Theisen chipped in 13 as well but it was Zimmermann's 6 points that where probably more meaningful. With Rodriguez picking up his 2nd foul with about 5 minutes left in the half, Zimmermann was able to get to the basket with no resistance and make good kick outs or score.

The 2nd half begins and the Bengals are able to slow the game down with a barrage of fouls and the Rebels aren't able to get going. The Bengals record their 7th team foul (including 2 weird back to back fouls by David Leafblad within 30 seconds) with 12 minutes left in the game which is Rodriguez's 3rd. Duberry picks up his 3rd foul and heads to the bench which slows the Rebels down even more and seems like the game comes to a screeching halt. The Bengals continue to rack up the fouls as the Rebels would make 1 of 2 free throws with the Bengals scoring on about every other possession.

With Zimmermann relentlessly attacking Rodriguez (16 points) he finally fouls out with about 7 minutes left in the game as Zimmermann tries to take him off the bounce and is fouled at the basket. The Rebels continue to shoot 50% from the free throw line and because of this it keeps the Bengals in the game and down only 13 points with 5 minutes left. The Rebels re-insert Duberry and he gets two quick baskets forcing the Bengals to call a timeout, 74-57.

After the timeout, Billy Giddings (10 points) fouls Duberry and fouls out. The Bengals can't get anything going and this one is over as both teams clear their benches.

The Bengals were looking for a home court advantage and some positive momentum as they hosted the Rebels of Champlin Park. Things did not start out well for the Bengals, as the Rebels started the game by draining several three pointers to put the Bengals in the hole 15-8 with 6 minutes gone in the first half. Mid way through the first half, Blaine's offense was not clicking, but the Bengals only trailed 23-14. Billy Giddings excited the crowd with a thunderous dunk with 3 minutes left in the half, and Gidding's three pointer to end the half left the Rebels' lead at 40-30.

The second half saw the Bengals cut into the Rebels' lead. Dylan Rodriguez got hot and his offense coupled with back to back three point baskets by Jesse Briggity and David Leafblad allowed the Bengals to get to within 65-61. A pair of Rodriquez free throws tied the score at 73-73. The Rebels held the ball for the last shot and despite tight Bengal defense, Champlin Park hit an off-balance jumper for the 75-73 win as time expired.

Rodriguez finished the night with 34 points; 25 of which came after intermission. Giddings had 11, Leafblad scored 10 and Jeff Harstad added 6 points for the Bengals.

The Rebels (12-8) take on Blaine (9-11) at home on Tuesday at 7pm. The Rebels defeated Blaine 75-73 in their earlier meeting this year when Duberry (20 points and season high) scored on a buzzer beater. Zimmermann also had a season high 25 points as the Bengal's Dylan Rodriguez scored a game high 34 points. Blaine has won 5 of their last 6 games

Hopkins Holds off Henry Sibley: In a match-up of the state’s two top teams, Hopkins showed why it is ranked No. 1 in the state with a 77-66 win over No. 2 Sibley Friday in front of 2,800 fans at the Sibley gym in Mendota Heights. Hopkins stars Royce White and Trent Lockett led a balanced attack with 13 points each, while teammate Marcus Williams added 12. Sibley was led by Mike Bruesewitz with 15 points and Maurice Hernandez with 15. Hopkins led 43-33 at halftime in a game that featured six players who have signed with Division I programs, including White (Minnesota), Lockett (Arizona State) and Bruesewitz (Wisconsin).

2. Champlin Park Challenging in Northwest Suburban: Osseo entered the season as the favorite in the Northwest Suburban Conference, and so far, the Orioles are living up to expectations at 3-0 in the conference and 9-1 overall. One team that could be ready to challenge in the conference race is Champlin Park. The Rebels defeated Blaine 75-73 Tuesday to move to 3-0 in the conference (7-4 overall). The Rebels lead the conference in points per game at 72.6 and have a balanced attack led by Scott Theisen (16.4 points per game), Kyle Zimmermann (15.2), Jasper Duberry (14.1), Josh Pella (11.3) and Tyler Munneke (7.7). In that win against Blaine Zimmermann scored 25 and Duberry 20 to lead the Rebels, who face Osseo Thursday evening.

3. Owatonna Rolling: Owatonna appears to be one outstate threat teams will have to deal with this year. The Huskies improved to 5-0 in the Big Nine and 8-2 overall with a 63-48 win over Rochester John Marshall Tuesday. Kyle Melcher scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds, Spencer Busho scored 11, Taylor Steinbauer 9 and Vaughn Thada 8. The Huskies are tied for first in the Big Nine Conference with Mankato West, the top-ranked team in 3A. Owatonna is ranked No. 8 in 4A. The two teams square off for the first time Friday in Mankato.

4. Awesome Blossom Playing Awesome: Blooming Prairie remains on top of the Gopher Conference with a 65-45 win over J-W-P this week. Cooper Nelson scored 15 points to lead BP, who improved to 5-0 in the conference and 8-1 overall. Matt Zellmer scored 14 and Israel Clark 12 in the win for BP.

5. Cooper Cruising: Nine games, nine wins for the Robbinsdale Cooper basketball team. Led by Rodney Williams (15.9 points per game), a Minnesota recruit and one of the most high-flying players in the country, Cooper is far from one dimensional. Other key players for the Classic Lake title contenders include Kenquane Brown (15.2), Quincey Bethea (13.1) and Joe Bright (13.3).

CHAMPLIN PARK 75, BLAINE 73

Junior guard Jasper Duberry made a short shot in the lane at the buzzer, giving the Rebels a victory over the Bengals in the Northwest Suburban. Senior forward Dylan Rodriguez scored a game-high 34 points for Blaine, which tied the score at 73-73 with 31.3 seconds remaining. Rodriguez scored 25 points in the second half as Blaine battled back from a 10-point deficit at halftime.

After taking a 40-30 halftime lead and leading by 10 most of the game, the Rebels hold off a furious last minute comeback by the Bengals.

CONGRATS!

The Rebels crusie out to a 36-24 halftime lead and go on and defeat the Huskies. Three players (Okafor 19, Theisen 14, Fuller 11) score in double figures as Okafor post another double double (11 rebounds). Duberry missed his 2nd straight game for medical reasons. The win gives the Rebels 2nd place (12-6) in the conference and brings their season to an end. Elk River, Maple Grove and Blaine finish in a 3 way tie for 3rd place with 10-8 records.

The Rebels go into their last game of the regular season with a 1 game lead (11-6) over the RED HOT Blaine Bengals (10-7) who have won their last 4 games. It's simple ... if the Rebels win they would take 2nd place in the NWS league. The Rebels defeated the Huskies in their previous match up back in February 67-60, however, the Huskies are on a 2 game winning streak (Anoka and Centennial). A Rebel lost coupled with a Blaine win at Elk River would have the two teams end in a tie for 2nd place.

The sections look pretty set reguardless of Friday's results. It looks like Irondale will be at Champlin Park next Tuesday night. The Rebels defeated the Knights (Utke 17 and Banks 11 points) in the Anoka Christmas tournament 68-56 behind Duberry's 16 and Okafor's 11 points.

Champlin Park 74 - Blaine 67 _____> 11-8

PARENT NIGHT
Finding a way … after jumping out to a 10 point 1st half lead, the Rebels get into foul trouble and send their starters to the bench and watch Blaine go on a 14-2 run to take a 34-32 lead into the half. Ty Jesinoski (8 points) had some big baskets to keep the Rebels in the game. The 2nd half started with both teams trading baskets as Blaine maintained a 6-8 point lead behind the shooting of Giddings (18) and Kreklow (14). The Bengals were able to get some easy baskets by rotating their taller guards to the block for easy baskets.

The Rebels went into a 1-3-1 zone which caused Blaine’s offense to slow down as Fuller (17 points including a couple of and1’s) continually beat their bigger guards to the basket. With Okafor controlling the boards (12 rebounds, 5 offensive) the Rebels started to push the ball and beat the taller Bengals down the floor. Duberry who picked up his 3rd foul 30 seconds into the 2nd half, had sat out most of the game do to foul trouble, leaked out for a couple of break out baskets with his second one tying the game with about 3 minutes left and swinging the momentum to the Rebels. Duberry scored 6 of the Rebels last 10 points. The Rebels defense stepped up and shut the Bengals down for the win and improved their 2nd place conference record to 9-3.

In other conference action, Elk River defeated a fast fading Maple Grove 75-63. The Rebels next game is at Coon Rapids Tuesday Febraury 19th @ 7pm. CTN Sports (Channel 15) will be televising the game live and replaying it at 12midnight.

Sophomore Standouts for Tuesday, February 12
Champlin Park v Park Center Kyle Zimmerman (CP) 18 points. Jasper Duberry (CP) 13 points. CP continues its strong play, humbling Park Center, the sophs are playing much bigger roles in the Rebels recent success.

Scores from 2/12/08 that caught my eye.
Northwest Suburban:
Blaine with a 94-57 blowout of Centennial to win their 3rd in a row.

They may be getting hot at the right time.
Champlin Park has now won 6 out of 7 (after losing 4 of 5) to improve to 8-3 in league play after blowing out Park Center at PC. The 1 loss was a 2 pt OT loss at 7AAAA contender Cambridge-Isanti. They're 1 game ahead of Maple Grove.

Champlin Park 88 - Park Center 53 / 10-8

Rebels in a blow out ... push winning streak to 3.

In a game in which the Rebels score exactly 44 points each half, they blow out Park Center 88- 53. The team seemed to be strictly about business as they put this one away early and quickly as the score was 44-27 at the half. The Rebels had five players score in double digits with Theisen leading the way with 19. Zimmermann, who had a huge 1st half finished with 18 as Duberry score most of his 13 in the 2nd half. Nolte and Okafor added 10 apiece. The Rebels improved their 2nd place conference record to 8-3 and are now 10-8 overall. They're 1 game ahead of Maple Grove. They have now won 6 out of 7 (after losing 4 of 5) with their one loss being a 2 pt OT loss at 7AAAA contender Cambridge-Isanti. The Rebels hit the court again this Friday at home (Parent Night) against Blaine as they try to avenge an earlier 3 point lost to the Bengals. The Bengals blew out Centennial 94-57 as Giddings and Rodriguez scored 23 points
each.
