09-10 Section 5AAAA Preview
This is the 22nd preview in my season preview series. In this edition I continue my look at the big boys in AAAA with a look at section 5. If you missed any of the previews, you can find links to all of them on the Section & Conference Previews page.

Section Winner: Champlin Park
The best of the NW Suburban resides here with the top 3 teams from that league. Cooper is inexperienced but talented. Spring Lake Park can play with any of these teams. Mounds View's tradition and coach Ziggy Kauls can't be overlooked either. A very balanced top 6 will make for very close if not high profile semifinals and a 4 vs 5 game that will be good. Champlin Park vs Cooper is an appealing matchup that could be a semifinal. Osseo and Cooper have seen each other 3 straight years in section play including the last 2 finals. They'll be challenged to do that again.

THE 2009 MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS ON NOVEMBER 23 2009
The 2009 boys Minnesota state high school basketball season gets underway on November 23rd 2009. I will be covering the basketball season in earnest again this year. Teams are now getting their squads together.
I was able to go over to Champlin Park High School and watch their pre-season workouts. Parents who are part of the basketball community and who have coached at different levels conducted the workouts.
The purpose of these types of events is for the players to do drill work that will help them out in the upcoming season. They also play some of competition they will see during the season.
After the drill work, the players split up into teams picked by the coaches and play a series of 5-5 to work up a sweat.
Overall I think this is a good way for the ball players to get a feel of where they now stand and what they still need to work on throughout the season.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John’s fell 71-65 to Concordia-St. Paul in exhibition play Sunday, Nov. 8, in St. Paul.
Junior Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) led the Johnnies with 16 points, while junior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) added 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) and sophomore Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 11 points apiece. Sophomore Andrew Latzke (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added eight points off the bench.
SJU out-rebounded the Golden Bears 36-33 and used 14 players in the game. The Johnnies shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field but just 28.6 percent (6-21) from three-point range.
The Johnnies officially begin the 2009-10 season this Sunday, Nov. 15, against No. 10 Wis.-Stevens Point. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sexton Arena in Collegeville. All current and retired military personnel and their families will receive free admission to the game with proper identification.

Lindenwood Defeats No. 1 Robert Morris On Last Second Free Throws
Brad Soderberg picked up his first win as a Lion on Friday evening.

Richard Rose hit two free throws with 0.9 seconds left to give the No. 12 Lindenwood men’s basketball team a 68-66 win over the top ranked team in the NAIA, Robert Morris. The game was played in front of a large home opener crowd and was the first victory for first year head coach Brad Soderberg.

Last season, Robert Morris was one of the top scoring teams in the NAIA by averaging 86.6 points a game. The Lions defense however forced 16 turnovers and held the Eagles to just 43.9 percent shooting from the field and 30.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Taking In My 1st TWolves Game This Year
What a game to pick for my 1st game of the year, the TWolves vs Kevin and the Celtics. The lights dim and whose face appears with and in the Twolves introductions on the JUMBO TRON, Champlin Parks own "Jasper Duberry". Fun stuff!
Duberry @ Video ShootOn to the game ... the TWolves lead the entire 1st half and go into the locker room at the half up 10 while Garnett is having a quiet game. Oleksiy Pecherov puts the Wolves on his back and carries them thru the 3rd period scoring inside and out, what a shooting touch he has.
The Celtics move Garnett over to guard Pecherov for the 4th quarter and I think this changes the game. It takes a way the Wolves hot scorer and makes him work on defense guarding Garnett even though Garnett is not scoring.
Long story short ... the game comes down to the last 10 seconds with the Wolves down 2 points with the ball. Brewer attacks the basket and is tied up by Garnett. This should have CLEARLY been called a foul but wasn't, the ref calls jump ball and the Wolves are left with a heave at the basket and lose by two ... 92-90.
BUT WHAT A GAME!

Good to see and FEEL the ENTIRE lower level packed and standing at the end. A lot of great entertainment during half time and timeouts, keep up the great work. I LOVED the scenario when Crunch took an obnoxious fans hat and attached balloons to it so it would fly a way after this fan spoiled a timeout entertainment piece. You can't make this stuff up!
Seems like EVERYONE was at the game tonight. I saw a number of high school players and bumped into columnist Steven Froemming who accepted my invitation to come over to Champlin Park next week to cover a Rebel open gym and interview a couple of players ... THANKS Steven and I'll see you next week.
Overall ... A great night at the Target Center!

High-scoring Cameron dismissed from Kenosha Christian Life

One of the state’s top scoring wing guards has been dismissed from school and his eligibility status for the 2009-10 season remains in doubt.
Joshua Cameron, a 6-foot-1 senior, was dismissed from Kenosha Christian Life School last Friday and is now attending Racine Park.
“Josh will be petitioning the WIAA to be allowed to play this season,” Kenosha Christian Life School coach Steve Powell said. “This is all I can say about the situation. Josh broke school policies and was dismissed.”
Ranked No. 20 among state seniors by WisSports.net, Cameron averaged 24.0 points per game as a junior after averaging 20.0 ppg as a sophomore when he attended Parkway Christian School in Oak Creek.
An athletic, strong and skilled guard who can get on a roll from the perimeter or get to the basket and finish in the lane, Cameron has a very quick first step toward the basket. He earned first-team all-league honors in the Southern Division of the Midwest Classic Conference as a junior and played on the grassroots scene last summer for the Wisconsin Force.
Powell said recently Cameron was receiving recruiting interest from a number of scholarship schools, including Ball State, Charleston, Columbia, North Dakota and SIU-Edwardsville.
If the WIAA grants eligibility for Cameron at Park, he’ll be joining a veteran team picked by many to win the Southeast Conference championship.
Coach Jim Betker returns three starters from a club that went 18-4 in senior guards Issaih Bridges (5-8) and Tre Edwards (6-0), along with senior forward Stanley McKenzie (6-4). In addition, the Panthers return five additional senior lettermen and welcome talented newcomers off a 19-1 junior varsity team and an 18-1 freshmen squad.

Rebels headed to state soccer tournament; Boys top Maple Grove to qualify for first time since 2004 season
Champlin's Nathan SeegerChamplin Park's explosive offense and home field advantage sparked the Rebels to a 5-2 win over visiting Maple Grove 5-2 in a Section boys' soccer final Friday, Oct. 23.
The game matched two teams that endured different difficulties this season. The sixth-seeded Crimson got off to a slow start and won only two of its first 12 games. They ten went on a late 5-1 run and beat defending state champion Osseo to reach the section final. The fourth-seeded Rebels opened the season winning nine of their first 10 games. Then injuries hit and they lost six of their final seven regular season contests. But they got healthy in time for sections and they beat Spring Lake Park 2-1, blanked top-seeded Centennial 2-0 before defeating the Crimson in the championship.
Maple Grove came out strong and applied early pressure but the Rebels defense held and goalie Michael McNelly came up with big saves. The Rebels finally settled in and forced a corner kick when a hard shot by senior captain John Levenick required MG goalie Mike Leszko to make a fine save. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball popped loose in front of the goal and senior midfielder Ayub Baker booted it home to give CP a 1-0 halftime lead.

Twitter Rivals
The weekend of Nov. 9-11, 2007, was a great time to be a Badger. On that Friday, the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team opened a home series with rival North Dakota, while the nationally ranked UW volleyball team welcomed Michigan. On Saturday, Bucky hosted the football Wolverines, and Sunday brought the men's basketball regular-season home opener. It was a perfect storm of scheduling that challenged Justin Doherty, who handled the athletic department's day-to-day communications at the time, to somehow capture it all. His idea: dispatch a single staffer armed only with a camera, a computer and the capacity to seek out a good time. "I said, 'Just go be a fan, and cover the weekend for our web site,'" recalls Doherty, who currently serves as the university's assistant athletic director for external relations. "The guy was so energized by that concept. It empowered him."

Hoopster born without a left hand gets his chance

NEW YORK (AP) - Kevin Laue isn't supposed to be here, standing on the court practicing for his first season of Division I basketball.
Born without a left hand, the 6-foot-11 center from Pleasanton, Calif., is now a freshman at Manhattan College, having earned a scholarship to play for the Jaspers and a chance to live out the dream of anyone who has been told they couldn't play a sport they loved because of a physical defect.
When the Jaspers' season opens on Nov. 14, the question will not be whether Laue can dribble, pass, block, score or rebound, but whether his opponents will underestimate his skills.
