Tonights win coupled with Osseo's loss at home last night to Andover, pushes the Rebels into sole possession of 1st place in the conference.

The Rebels (17-4 / 12-1) continue conference play on Friday February 19th as they continue on to game two of their three game home stand taking on the Centennial Cougars (9-12 / 6-7) for the 3rd time this season.

The Rebels defeated the Cougars 72-65 on their home court on January 22nd and 67-65 in the championship game of the Olive Garden Holiday Tournament back in December at Bethel College. The Rebels have the opportunity to defeat the Cougars twice in conference play in the same year for the first time in the last two years.

The Cougars who defeated Elk River at home on Tuesday have won 4 of their last 6 games. They are led by sharp shooter Nathan Kuck (14 ppg) and the versatile hard working forward Brian Sarvela (12 ppg). Sarvela is one of the surprised players of the conference.

In the team’s last match up, Brandon Davis led the way with 19 points followed by Kyle Zimmermann’s 15 and Jasper Duberry’s 12 points as they led the entire game.

The Rebels, who won a scary 3 point game over Coon Rapids at home on Tuesday, look to push their current winning streak to eleven. The Rebels are averaging 69 points a game are currently #2 in the Minnesota Basketball News poll and #5 in the Minnesota Preps poll. The Rebels, who might be without Zimmermann, have won 16 of their last 18 games. Conference co-leader Osseo (currently #3 in the Minnesota Basketball News poll and #6 in the Minnesota Preps poll) are off Friday night as they played Andover at home Thursday night.

Cougars' boys hoops: rematch with Rebels doesn't come as close

CIRCLE PINES — After a 10-3 first half start against Champlin Park, the Centennial boys basketball team was outpaced by a Rebel squad led by a devastating three-man scoring threat. Losing 72-65 at home Friday, Jan. 22, the Cougars stayed within 13 points for the entire second half, but couldn't close the gap to pick up the redeeming win.

Leading Centennial in scoring for the Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC) match was Jeffrey Burns and Anthony Gerding with 12 points each, followed by Michael Kuhnly (10).
The Cougars had a chance to make up for their razor-thin 67-65 loss to the Rebels in the Bethel Holiday Tournament championship round in late December. But some late, yet inspired, shooting accuracy by Champlin Park's top players gave them the unmatched edge.
Brandon Davis led the Rebels with 25 points as guard, while Kyle Zimmermann's strong first-half performance led him to finish with 15 points and Jasper Duberry to end with 12 points. They and their teammates found an early comfort zone behind the three-point line, making five in the first half alone.

CP 72 - Centennial 65

The Rebels start this one by over passing and have a number of unforced turnovers that lead to easy transition baskets for the Cougars as they take a quick 6 point lead. The Rebels settle down and go on a couple of runs sandwiched around some Davis (pictured) 3 pointers to take a half time lead of 38-31.

The Rebels take care of the ball the 2nd half and build a couple double digit leads that Centennial cut to single digits but don’t have enough to get close until a couple minutes left when they get it to 6. Hager (who started again for Williamson) knocks down a couple of free throws and Centennial misses on three straight possessions as the Rebel close it out.

The Rebels were able to hold Nathan Kuck to 9 points as his shots were not following and Sarvela was limited to 9 points as well. The Cougars were led by Jeff Burns' 12 points.

Great shot selection, passing and shooting from the Rebels as Zimmermann and Davis knock down a number of 3’s. Davis (season high 19 points) who is becoming more comfortable on the wing shot very well and you can see his confidence growing as Zimmermann was Zimmermann (a 15 and 13 double double) around the basket. Duberry (pictured) who scored 12 points probably had one of his better games of the season from a point guard stand point as he continually set up teammates (4 assists) and got the right player the ball in good scoring positions.

The Rebels who are now in a 3 team tie for the conference lead with Anoka and Osseo, pushed their winning streak to 3 and have won 9 of their 11 last games as their next three games are at home.

The Rebels (9-4) fresh off their big win over Osseo Tuesday night take their 2 game winning streak to Centennial on Friday night to take on the Cougars (5-8). The Rebels have won 8 of their last 10 games. The Cougars were upset by Maple Grove Tuesday night as the Crimson got their 1st conference win of the season.

The Cougars who are on a 2 game losing streak are led by sharp shooter Nathan Kuck (15 ppg) and the versatile hard working forward Brian Sarvela (13 ppg).

The Rebels who defeated the Cougars 67-65 in the championship game of the Olive Garden Holiday Tournament in December at Bethel College have split conference games with the Cougars the last two years with the home team winning each game. The Rebels who are averaging 71 points a game have four players averaging double digits.

Tipoff is 7pm.

Watching Others

Anoka 81 –  Centennial 66

Went to see if the Anoka Tornadoes are as good as they say. Was skeptical about going after seeing that Elk River blew them out the other night 96-50 at the Target Center. See a few NWSC coaches in the gym; Osseo, Maple Grove, Andover, Elk River and Blaine. A few local D3 coaches as well.

Anyway on to the game … Anoka jumps out early as Centennial is able to get back into the game before the half and cut the score to 31-28 at the half. Centennial doesn’t have anyone who can play Anoka’s post player Lomumba Ismail as he has his way in the lane and is on his way to a big game. Gerding who I believe must have missed his first 5-8 shots scores about 7 to close out the first half.

Second half gets going at a much faster paste as Anoka continues to feed Ismail in the paint as Centennial’s jump shots start to fall. Enter Anoka sophomore Marcus Tyson who had 6 points in the 1st half off the bench. I think he might have been the 2nd guard off the bench but you couldn’t tell it as he starts hitting jump shots and then going to the basket on 1 or 2 Cougars at a time with ease and scoring. The Tornadoes start to pull away as the Cougars missed bunny after bunny after bunny. Anoka guards continued to drive the baseline and then bounce pass to Ismail in the lane for baskets or fouls. The only thing that kept the Cougars in striking range was Ismail missing free throws and the play of Cougar Brian Sarvela. Sarvela, who is clearly Centennial’s best player and a hard worker, at one point went on an 8-0 run by himself. I think he defers too much to the Cougar’s Gerding which will probably change as the season goes on. What was also very noticeable was the ease that the Anoka wings (Sherva and Gave) had getting to the basket off the elbows when Tyus wasn’t sprinting by them for baskets.

Back to Anoka’s Tyus. He has to be one of the best sophomores in the conference and maybe in the state. He plays with a great calmness and confidence that you usually see in a senior. He can hit the 3 and get to the basket and finish as his 21 second half points illustrated. His best play of the game was when he was in the lane on an Anoka free throw. While getting boxed out he grabbed the rebound with one hand and attempted a shot while being pushed to the floor by a Centennial player. Look for him to be in the Anoka starting line up before the end of the season as he is more athletic and versatile than the guards that are currently starting in front of him.

The Rebels play the Tornadoes for the first time this season at home February 23rd.

Time off does Champlin Park some good

The break for the Champlin Park boys basketball team came long before school was out for the holidays.

The Rebels last played Dec. 11 and 12 with a pair of games in Minnetonka, losing to Tonka and Cretin-Derham Hall.

Sixteen days later, they returned to the court with a re-vamped offensive approach that resulted in three victories and an Olive Garden Holiday Classic championship at Bethel University.

"The time off really helped because we used it well," said head coach Mark Tuchscherer. "We put in an additional offense where we take advantage of our athletic ability, and it allowed us to use our depth some more."

No question the change in philosophy worked. Over the course of the three victories, six different players ended up scoring in double figures, as the Rebels topped St. Anthony 82-34, Minneapolis Washburn 77-66 and Centennial 67-65.

Brandon Davis (16 points), D'Andre Williamson (14) and Kyle Zimmerman (10) led the way against St. Anthony. Josh Pella had 22 points, Zimmerman 17, Davis 16 and Jasper Duberry 14 in the win over Washburn. Pella scored 15 more, Jordan Reibling had 14 points and Dillon Hager finished with a dozen in the championship victory over Centennial.

"We were able to go 10 deep and get contributions from a lot of different guys," said Tuchscherer, whose team also beat White Bear Lake 70-44 Jan. 2 to improve to 5-2 on the year.

"We wanted out guys to get to the basket and attack, and we were able to do that the entire tournament. I was real pleased with how we played."

In The End It Was All Pella

CP 67 – Centennial 65

The Rebels who survived a scare from the night before take on conference rival Centennial with a number of college scouts and a nice crowd on hand for the late start.

The Rebels start their usual starting lineup when after about 4 minutes they make a line change, yep five substitutes for the entire starting five. The Rebel subs actually play better than the starters do as Hager scores and Reibling (pictured) knocks down two deep 3 pointers, timeout CP 18-16.

Brian Sarvela (15 points for the game) is singlehandedly keeping the Cougars in the game with a number of put backs and short shots. The Rebels team speed starts to become apparent as the get a couple of delay break out baskets as Zimmermann makes 1 of 2 free throws for a CP 25-22 lead. The Rebels run continues as Pella gets a break out dunk and Duberry is fouled as he scores attacking the basket, his missed free throw makes the score 29-22 lead with 2 minutes left and it looks like the Rebels are about to open this one up. The Cougars weather the storm as Pella scores to end the half 33-28 CP. Very clean 1st half as both teams only had 6 team fouls.

The 2nd half starts and Kuck gets lose for a long 2 and the score is 35-32 CP with 15 minutes left. The teams play pretty even over the next 7 minutes, CP 48–42 with eight minutes left when Centennial goes on a mini run 50-48 CP. The Rebels collect themselves, Reibling hits another 3 pointer and the Rebels extend their lead to 56-51with 2:40 left.

Centennial won’t go away as they pound away on the boards for 2nd and 3rd shots and closes the score to 58-56 with 1:15 left. Centennial who sat and watched the Rebels miss a number of free throws yesterday starts the fouling game. Duberry who played very limited minutes makes his 2 free throws and Davis closes the game going 4 for 4. Centennial makes a very long uncontested 3 pointer to end the game 67-65 CP.

In a championship game that Duberry gets the okay to play five minutes before the tap, Hager fills in and scores a career high 12 points, Reibling comes in and knocks down some 3’s, you have a five man substitution change out 4 minutes into the game, made free throws on intentional fouls at the end of the championship game and Pella’s continued tournament dominance, the Rebels have a performance to be proud of as they display their team speed, versatility and depth.

Davis, Zimmermann and Pella (pictured) were named to the all tournament team with Pella leaving with the well deserved tournament MVP trophy. Pella only scored 3 points in the tournament opener against St Anthony’s as that game was turned over to the subs in an 82-34 blowout. He put the Rebels on his back for game 2 in their OT victory over Washburn as he scored 22 points on a variety shots (2 of 3 from the arch). Pella led the Rebels again in the championship game with 15 points in which he had some Centennial run stopping baskets and a nice break out dunk before the half.

The Rebels take on conference rival Centennial Wednesday 12/30 for the tournament championship at 8:15pm. The Cougars defeated Minnehaha Academy in the tournament's other semi final game.

CP 74 - Centennial 56

The Rebels run out to a quick halftime 43-15 lead and never look back as they blowout the Cougars to end their season. Tony Gerding made 2 free throws for the Cougars to bring them with in 2 points at 15-13 at the 11 minute mark. Over the next 9 minutes the Rebels go on an unbelievable run outscoring the Cougars 25-0. The Cougars finally score again with a minute left in the half.

The Rebels moved the ball really well and continued to make the extra pass to wide open shooters and knocked down a number of 3's thru out the game.

The Cougars started the 2nd half with a small run that the Rebels answered as the Cougars could not get within 16 points. Great job by the Rebel front line holding the Cougar front line tandem of Adams and Peterson to 13 points.
Theisen
Both teams cleared their benches with about 3 minutes to go. Scott Theisen playing in his final game at Champlin Park led the Rebels with 20 points.

Win Or Go Home!

The Rebels (the 4 seed) take on the Centennial Cougars (the 5 seed) Wednesday at 7pm at Champlin Park in the first round of the Class 4A Section 5 tournament. The teams split their two games during the season with each team winning at home. The Cougars current two game losing streak should not be taken lightly as those games where to Blaine and an 1 point thriller to Osseo last Friday.

The Cougars are led by their front line of Anthony Adams and Zach Peterson. The Rebels are going to need a big game from Kyle Zimmermann (21 points and 9 rebounds in the 1st game) to pull this one off. Zimmermann left the second game at the half with a sprained ankle. The Rebels look to have the edge at guard with Theisen (scored 16 points in both games) and Duberry (18 in the 1st win). Another interesting fact will be the teams benches, the Rebels who have recently shortened theirs while the Cougars will play at least nine.

CP 61 - Elk River 74

In front of a packed house and a well planned Senior Night, the Elks play a solid first half of basketball with senior Nick Held leading the way. Jasper Duberry picks up his second foul a little pass the midway mark and heads to the bench. Scott Theisen and Kyle Zimmermann make enough baskets to keep it close as the Elks take a halftime lead of 39-31.

The word of a close Osseo Centennial game spreads through the gym. The Rebels start the 2nd half with a couple of quick baskets when Held reinserts himself. The senior continues to score at will as the Rebels have no answer for him. With Theisen three's not falling, Duberry dribbling to much, Pella making bad decisions and Zimmermann not finishing around the basket this one is over. Great defensive effort by Tyler Munneke holding Jack Gavins to 7 points.

Give credit to the Elks who shot very well all night long and deserved to win this one. Theisen led the Rebels with 15 points as Zimmermann added 13. The Rebels lose to yet another opponent that they had previously EASILY defeated by 20 points earlier in the season. It looks like another game where the other team makes adjustments from their prior game and the Rebels don't. Having to play a team that they have previously played in sections might make a quick exit for them.

A Rebel win and a Centennial lost to Osseo would have given the Rebels 2nd place in the conference, instead they finish tied for 2nd place with Centennial and Maple Grove.

Congratulations to the Northwest Suburban Conference winner, Osseo Orioles, who knock off Centennial 60-59 in a thriller and finish 17-1 in the conference.

CP 70 - Centennial 76

The Rebels easily get out to a 6 point lead and push the lead to double digits as Kyle Zimmermann gets the Cougar front line in foul trouble. Josh Pella picks up two quick fouls and has to sit the last ten minutes of the 1st half. With the half coming to a close, Zimmermann comes down awkwardly and sprains his ankle and goes into the locker room on crutches with the Rebels up 44-30.

After some very questionable officiating the Cougars are back in the game and its obvious that the officials and not the players will determine this game as they did last year. The Cougars go on to win this important conference game 76-70.
