Prologue

Perfect weather for a polar bear with the mercury at -13 this morning on the way to White Bear Lake. An early parents day in the east metro. While a surprising time, always nice to see the parents recognized. And the Donatelli's pizza is some of the best I encounter anywhere. That and Davanni's on back to back game days makes for a quality life. No David Rademacher or Richard Azevedo for White Bear Lake.

Game Time

Back to back triples from Dillon Hager and Jordan Reibling threaten to break this one open early but the Bears hang around. Eric Gebeke with a steal for 2 and then another bucket to keep WBL close 17-13 at the 8:55 mark. Kyle Zimmerman kicks out to Josh Pella for 3 and then scores a bucket of his own to keep the Rebels on top. He closes out the half with a pair of freebies. 31-23 Champlin Park at the half. Spencer Cummings missing significant time in the half with 2 fouls and Vidal Vance missed the last 11+ of the half after he got a finger in the eye or something of the sort.

Champlin Park opens the half on a 12-4 run. Jasper Duberry going glass to finish the run. 43-27 Champlin Park with 14:15 left. White Bear Lake comes right back out of the timeout. Spencer Cummings with a pair of post baskets including a nice reverse layup to end a 9-0 Bears run against the Rebels bench. 43-36 Champlin Park with 11:55 left. Champlin Park goes on another big run to put this one away. 17-4 over the next 5:25. 60-40 Champlin Park with 5:30 left and that's all to be written. Champlin Park wins 70-44. Only 8 points in the last 11:55 for White Bear Lake.

Time off does Champlin Park some good

The break for the Champlin Park boys basketball team came long before school was out for the holidays.

The Rebels last played Dec. 11 and 12 with a pair of games in Minnetonka, losing to Tonka and Cretin-Derham Hall.

Sixteen days later, they returned to the court with a re-vamped offensive approach that resulted in three victories and an Olive Garden Holiday Classic championship at Bethel University.

"The time off really helped because we used it well," said head coach Mark Tuchscherer. "We put in an additional offense where we take advantage of our athletic ability, and it allowed us to use our depth some more."

No question the change in philosophy worked. Over the course of the three victories, six different players ended up scoring in double figures, as the Rebels topped St. Anthony 82-34, Minneapolis Washburn 77-66 and Centennial 67-65.

Brandon Davis (16 points), D'Andre Williamson (14) and Kyle Zimmerman (10) led the way against St. Anthony. Josh Pella had 22 points, Zimmerman 17, Davis 16 and Jasper Duberry 14 in the win over Washburn. Pella scored 15 more, Jordan Reibling had 14 points and Dillon Hager finished with a dozen in the championship victory over Centennial.

"We were able to go 10 deep and get contributions from a lot of different guys," said Tuchscherer, whose team also beat White Bear Lake 70-44 Jan. 2 to improve to 5-2 on the year.

"We wanted out guys to get to the basket and attack, and we were able to do that the entire tournament. I was real pleased with how we played."

The Rebels push their winning streak to four as they have there way with the Bears. Zimmermann scores 17 as the Rebels raise their record to 5-2.

The Rebels stay ahead of the Bears pretty much the entire 1st half behind the inside game of Kyle Zimmermann 13 points & 14 rebounds who notched his first double double of the year. They go into the locker room up 34-28 at the half. The Rebels continue to run the court well in the 2nd half as the Bears can not get up and down with them.

Their defense in the 2nd half stops the Bears in a couple of 3 minute stretches. With Hager and Marquardt in at the guards and applying relentless pressure, the Rebels don't allow a shot in 5 straight possessions at the 5 minute mark to pull away for the win.

The Rebels have four players in double digits. Spencer Cummings led the Bears with 16 points.

• Hager - plays more meaningful minutes and his defense in a 2nd half run help the Rebels pull away.

• Munneke - good all around game (4 rebounds, 2 assist & 3 steals)

Next Up White BearLake

The Rebels host the White Bear Lake Bears at home on Tuesday December 23rd at 7pm. The Rebels lost their game with the Bears last year 58-56 in over time when they where not able to convert on the free throw line.

The Bears are lead by junior post player Spencer Cummings and senior Mitch Fiereck.

Rebel boy cagers win once in 3 tries

The Champlin Park boys basketball team played three times last week, winning once.The Rebels topped Park Center 75-60, and had four players finish in double figures in the win. Nate Dudgeon led the way with 20 points. Rex Whitehead scored 13, Emeka Okafor added 12 and Kyle Zimmerman had 10.Champlin Park lost its only other conference match-up of the week, falling at home to Maple Grove 76-70. Okafor scored 18 points in the loss, and Jasper Duberry added 16 and Calvin Nolte 13.Then, last Saturday, the Rebels dropped an overtime heartbreaker 58-56 at White Bear Lake. Nolte led the way with 14 points in that loss. Scott Theisen scored 12 and Okafor finished off a productive week with 11 more.This week, Champlin Park was scheduled to play host to Coon Rapids Jan. 15, before traveling to Blaine Jan. 18.
