Champlin Park In Timberwolves Shootout

The Rebels will play the Hopkins Royals in the January 9th shootout at 8pm in the night cap.

Fall League Week 2 Wrap-Up

Kevin AlsteensMinnesotaPreps.com Staff Analyst
Week 2 of 2009 fall league play continued to showcase some of the Minnesota's top talent. Summer teammates were highlighted on opposite teams in one of the weekend's best games. A single handed comeback against a top defensive team, top players with impressive stats and a 2014 star on display were all highlights of the weekend.

Other results from Saturday included Champlin Park remaining undefeated in the league. The Rebels defeated Minnehaha 67-46 after leading by 2 at the half. Jasper Duberry with 17 points for the Rebels. Champlin Park also defeated Minnesota Select 59-48. Minnehaha split their games on the day with a 65-54 victory over Maple Grove. Orono defeated St. Anthony 51-50 in an overtime nail biter. St. Anthony 1 of 6 from the foul line at the end of regulation to keep the Spartans in the game. St. Anthony defeated Blake 72-50 in their other game.

Week 2 of 2009 Fall Leagues

Week 2 of fall leagues is in the books. The notes

  • MYAS claim "Best and largest pool of certified officials in the state." was totally debunked today. Officials that I saw doing the varsity boys games at Hopkins as a whole, did not compare to the MBA league.
  • Nice to see Duluth East coach Chuck Tolo in the house on Saturday following his kids. With the top programs, you seem to always see the head guys out following their guys.
  • Credit to Aaron Ziman for outplaying Jasper Duberry in Select's loss to Champlin Park.
  • D3 schools and AAU guys at the MBA this weekend (and the coolest guy in the NSIC!). Nice to see the interest.
  • Minnehaha with 12 oz cans of Pepsi this week instead of the usual 1 Liter bottles. The horror. I'm an addict, I have a habit to maintain. When I mentioned this to the concession stand, I got the perfect response. "You can always come back for more". Well said, I got nothing for that one.
  • The stars were out this weekend. I thought last weekend had some big performances, but some very nice performances by known names this weekend.
  • Fun to see a couple of good quality young point guards playing. Kashif Hayes (2013) from St. Louis Park is 1. The other is from the south metro is the younger brother of former DeLaSalle/Hopkins star Jadee Jones.

MBA Fall League Week 2 Results ... Rebels Pick Up 2 More Wins To Get To 4-0

Champlin Park 67 - Minnehaha Academy 46
The Rebels get out to a quick start in this one and are up 38-28 at the half. They continue to build there lead and easily put this one away. Duberry leads the way with 17 with Pella adding 13.

Champlin Park 59 - MN Select 48
The Rebels jump out to a quick lead only to lose it to a hot 3 point shooting performance by the Select team which saw Alex Koch (St. Louis Park) score 16 of his 21 points. Minnesota: Mounds View football on the move

Jackson County Central, Holy Family also among the headline-makers this week.

Thursday, September 24, 2009
By: Matt Krumrie

A look back at who’s hot, who’s on top, who is emerging and who to look for heading into another week of Minnesota high school football.

The Fab Five

1. Mounds View making move: The Suburban East is traditionally one of the tougher Twin Cities conferences, and things don’t appear to be different this year. Cretin-Derham Hall is ranked No. 3 in the state, led by quarterback Mark Alt and the nation’s top recruit, OL Seantrel Henderson. Stillwater, meanwhile, is 3-0 and ranked No. 6 in the state. Woodbury was a preseason top-10 team, but has since fallen out of the polls.

One team that is poised to crack the top 10 this week is Mounds View. The Mustangs, who host Hastings on Friday, opened with a win over Roseville, then lost to Stillwater 19-7 before rolling over Woodbury 35-7. The Mustangs, led by coach Jim Galvin, have been paced on offense by quarterback Jacke Carroll, who has thrown for 328 yards, and running back Kyle Mauricio, who has run for 188 yards on the season. The real story for Mounds View, however, may be its defense, which is allowing only 8.3 points per game. If Mounds View can survive a manageable midseason schedule, an Oct. 14 game against Cretin-Derham Hall could loom large.

2. Marquardt, Champlin Park produce: Brandon Marquardt entered the season as one of the top returning backs in the Twin Cities, and was one of many players who helped the Rebels enter the season ranked in the top 10 in the state. Marquardt delivered in a key Northwest Suburban Conference game against Anoka on Friday, scoring four touchdowns in a 35-28 win. Marquardt scored on runs of 1, 25 and 1 yards, and returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score. He scored three of the game’s last four touchdowns, including the 1-yard run in the fourth quarter that gave Champlin Park the win. The Rebels face Blaine on Friday in another tough early-season test.

Blaine relies on unflinching rally to beat Champlin Park

By DAVID La VAQUE, Star Tribune
Last update: September 25, 2009 - 1:08 AM

Brandon Marquardt gave Champlin Park a boost with a dramatic touchdown catch just before halftime.

Amid the good vibes in the Blaine High School visitors locker room, Marquardt noticed a poignant sign on the wall.

"It said something like, 'You can't compare the heart of the team that wins and the team that loses. You look at who had the heart to come back,'" he said. "I told the guys we had to keep playing hard in the second half because they wouldn't stop."

Blaine vs Champlin in Pictures

Blaine packed the stands for their Homecoming game against visiting Champlin Park Thursday evening. These are two teams who have been in the top of the conference for many seasons. The game was fitting for two strong teams with a healthy respect for one another.

Rebels thwarted in road test with Blaine; 32-28 loss precedes Homecoming visit from first place Andover

Champlin Park's Brandon Marquardt tries to get out of the backfield in the Rebels' 32-28 loss at Blaine Thursday, Sept. 24. Marquardt rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Photos by Nick Clark

It was supposed to pay homage to a departed pop star, but the halftime performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at Blaine High School Thursday, Sept. 24, found a more local twist.

In front of a state-wide television audience and an energized homecoming crowd, the host Bengals and Champlin Park traded big-play thrills before a three-play sequence helped Blaine snag its third victory of the year, 32-28.

With Blaine pinned deep in its own end, Champlin Park linebacker Zach Heinrich dropped a sure-thing interception that would have been a touchdown. Two snaps later, the Bengals' punt slipped through the hands of Rebel returner Tanner Brust.

Shipping up to Blaine

By David La Vaque

Should be a good one in the Northwest Suburban Conference tonight. Champlin Park (3-0) at Blaine (2-1). Saw Champlin Park in Week One and two things stood out. One, running back Brandon Marquardt. The guy does a little of everything. Runs well. Great hands out of the backfield. Also takes snaps out of the Wildcat formation. And I thought I heard he might have played some slot receiver too. I'll get there early tonight and see if he's driving the Rebels bus as well. Second thing, the Rebels defense is good enough, but not great like the 2008 crew. They have yet to hold an opponent to fewer than 21 points.

The Rebels were down 6 with 2 minutes remaining before pulling out the win. The Rebels followed up that win with a 61-43 win over Orono. Orono played without junior sharpshooter Jordan Smith. MBA Fall League Week 1 Results

Champlin Park 53 - DeLaSalle 50
After a 38 minute BATTLE and down 6 points with 2 minutes left, CP uses full court ball pressure to pull this one out. Zimmermann leads the Rebels with 20 points in a monster performance.
(Kyle Zimmermann)

Good performances from the Islander's Jalen Jaspers and Jr phenom Jonah Travis.

Jr Nyenati Allison's full court ball pressure and poise was instrumental in both games.

Champlin Park 61 - Orono 48
With the score tied at 37 with 6 minutes left, Reibling knocks down a couple of long 3's as CP goes on a 22-4 run to put this one away as all nine Rebels score.

Friday's metro roundup

NORTHWEST SUBURBAN

• CHAMPLIN PARK 35, ANOKA 28: Brandon Marquardt has a flair for the dramatic. The senior running back scored his fourth touchdown on a 1-yard plunge late in the fourth quarter as the Rebels survived a back-and-forth matchup with the Tornadoes. Marquardt gave Champlin Park a 28-21 lead earlier in the quarter with a 99-yard kickoff return. Anoka senior Pat Cotter, who rushed for 171 yards on 17 carries, tied it at 28 with a 33-yard run.

Champlin Park escapes with last-second field goal

(Created: Monday, September 14, 2009 9:35 AM CDT)

In a moment of pure hysteria, Champlin Park senior Jack Elsnes could only revert to his own personal flashbacks.

Two years ago, Elsnes had a field goal opportunity that would have lifted the Rebels' sophomore football team to a victory over Maple Grove.

He missed it.
But on Friday, Sept. 11, fate handed him a second opportunity. This time, his 35-yard attempt was never in doubt.

Elsnes drilled a game-winning field goal with 10 seconds left and then proceeded to make a game-saving stop on the final play of the night as Champlin Park completed an improbable, come-from-behind 31-28 win over visiting Maple Grove.

Fall Hoops Session 1 Preview

Fall Leagues in the metro kickoff this weekend. Here's what to look for.

MBA Fall League
14 teams in this group but tons of talent. Sibley comes in with D1 bigs Mike Rostampour and Jake Kreuser plus uber athletic guard Jordan Jackson to represent the top of class AAAA. Class AAA well represented with DeLaSalle. They feature wing Jalen Jaspers and one of the state's best juniors, Jonah Travis. The Islanders Tri-Metro West rival Minnehaha is also participating. Parker Hines at the point and Taylor Hanson inside are the Redhawks leaders. Breck and Blake also participating. Not to be outdone, the Tri-Metro East is represented with St. Anthony and Josh Pratt. Duluth East makes the trip with senior sharpshooter Dyami Starks and athletic sophomore wing Johnny Woodard.

Champlin Park enters with their nucleus from last year back. That includes point guard Jasper Duberry and post Kyle Zimmerman. I voted Matt Sellers the most improved player of the summer basketball season. The big man joins the Rebels for this fall league. Hoops Training enters a team of SW Minnesota players led by Marshall point guard Caleb Johnson. Orono comes in with their pair of shooters junior Jordan Smith and sophomore Brady Wohler with junior forward Jeremy Borg.

Play begins at Minnehaha Academy Saturday morning bright and early at 8 AM with the last game at 8 PM. Champlin Park vs DeLaSalle is an outstanding opener with Matt Sellers having a little extra motivation in that one after seeing minimal time at DLS last season. Three Henry Sibley games (Hoops Training, Minnehaha and Duluth East) end the day on a high note.

For more insight and resources on boys basketball in the metro, including a full fall league schedule, read my Twin Cities Boys Hoops blog.

Congratulations to Zimmermann and Duberry
