Up Next Anoka

The Rebels (12-4) are back home on Wednesday February 3rd to put their 5 game winning streak on the court against top conference rival Anoka for the first time this season.

The Tornadoes were on a six game winning streak and in a three way tie for 1st place with the Rebels and Osseo until they lost at home to Osseo last Friday 61-49. In that game Osseo had a one point halftime lead and pulled away for the win with great team defense.

The Tornadoes are led by senior post player Lomumba Ismail who is averaging 16 points a game and is the 2nd leading rebounder in the conference. The Tornadoes second leading scoring is sophomore sensation Marcus Tyus who runs the show for them and is averaging 13 points a game. The Tornadoes who don’t have a deep bench rely on their top seniors David Mooers (12 ppg) and BJ Sherva (10 ppg) who seems to be the glue of the team.

The Rebels, who are 7-1 in the conference and tied for first place with Osseo (who’s at home against Elk River), need to knock off the Tornadoes to stay in first place. The Rebels had four players score in double digits (led by Davis’ 19 points) in their win Friday against Andover as Dillon Hager had a career high 15 points. The Rebels, who are averaging 71 points a game, have won 11 of their last 13 games.

Tipoff is at 7pm.

The Rebels race out to a quick 27-13 lead as Andover's fouls mount which turns this into a 37-20 Rebel halftime lead.

Andover starts the 2nd half with a run and cut the Rebel lead to 46-37 with 13 minutes to go. The Rebels make a few substitutions and push their lead to 56-39. The Rebels maintain their pace and close this one out as Hager (pictured) has a career high 15 points.

Up Next Andover

The Rebels (11-4) take their 4 game winning streak on the road Friday January 29th to take on the Andover Huskies (7-6) for the first time this season in conference play.

The Huskies are led by two seniors, post player Jason Schneider and guard Andrew Berndt who are both averaging 15 points a game. Guard Tyler Finnes is adding 14 points a game. The Huskies pushed #7 Anoka to the limit Tuesday night and almost pulled off the upset. Andover was up 5 points with 1:07 to go but was not able to hold on as they lost the shoot out at home 85-82. Andover had four players score in double digits and is now 3-4 in the conference.

The Rebels, who are 6-1 and in a three way tie in the conference for first place, need to win this road game to keep pace with conference leaders Anoka and Osseo who face each other in Anoka on Friday. Our Rebels, who are averaging 71 points a game, are on a four game winning streak and have won 10 of their last 12 games.

Tipoff is at 7pm.

Basketbal: Elk boys fall to Champlin Park

STAR NEWS
Wednesday, 27 January 2010

Free-throw accuracy boosted Champlin Park as the Rebels held off the Elk River Elks 68-60 on Tuesday evening in Champlin.

The Rebels hit 19 of 25 freebies, including 14-for-18 in the second half, while the Elks were just 2-for-3 in the game. Down the stretch, free throws turned a tight game into an eight-point margin.

Kyle Zimmerman scored 15 points and Jasper Duberry and Brandon Davis 11 each for the Rebels, now 2-5 in the NWSC and 8-7 overall.

Jack Nelson tallied 15 points to lead the Elks. Ben Erickson added 10 points and Menco Yeanay nine.

The Elks, who have lost three of their last five, dipped to 4-3 in the conference and 10- overall. They will host Blaine on Friday evening.

CP 68 - Elk River 60

Very close 1st half with Pella picking up two quick fouls, the Elks lead 29-23 with 4 minutes left in the half. The Rebels go on a small run to close to 31-30 at the half behind Hager's and Zimmermann's (pictured) 8 points each.

The 2nd half stays close until Pella breaks out for a dunk and Reibling adds 2 free throws and it looks like the Rebels are about to pull away as they get their first lead of the half 44-43. The Elks answer with 3 of their own when Davis knocks down a 3 to give the Rebels the lead for good at 47-46 with 7 minutes left as the Elks fouls continue to mount. Baskets by Duberry, Davis and Zimmermann push the Rebel’s lead as they take control of the game.

The Rebels continue to knock down free throws and are home free at 61-55 with a minute left. The story of the game was the Rebels free throw shooting as they made 19 of 25, easily their best performance of the year. The Rebel’s who are known for not being productive at the free throw line, can put this myth away with a couple more shooting performances like this. They made 14 of 18 in the 2nd half.

The Rebels got a big lift off their bench from TJ Okafor (pictured) who was huge around the basket. Okafor had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.

State Rankings - January 25th Class AAAA

1. Eden Prairie (14-0)
2. Robbinsdale Cooper (12-1)
3. Hopkins (12-2)
4. Cretin-Derham Hall (12-2)
5. Stillwater (13-2)
6. Apple Valley (11-3)
7. St. Cloud Tech (10-2)
8. Champlin Park (10-4)
9. Osseo (11-3)
10. Forest Lake (11-4)

Champlin Park slides in above Osseo because they beat Osseo although I am really cringing on that Coon Rapids loss. CP will really prove they belong if they beat Anoka and Elk River coming up on the schedule and their losses include close games to CDH and Hopkins.

Cougars' boys hoops: rematch with Rebels doesn't come as close

CIRCLE PINES — After a 10-3 first half start against Champlin Park, the Centennial boys basketball team was outpaced by a Rebel squad led by a devastating three-man scoring threat. Losing 72-65 at home Friday, Jan. 22, the Cougars stayed within 13 points for the entire second half, but couldn't close the gap to pick up the redeeming win.

Leading Centennial in scoring for the Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC) match was Jeffrey Burns and Anthony Gerding with 12 points each, followed by Michael Kuhnly (10).
The Cougars had a chance to make up for their razor-thin 67-65 loss to the Rebels in the Bethel Holiday Tournament championship round in late December. But some late, yet inspired, shooting accuracy by Champlin Park's top players gave them the unmatched edge.
Brandon Davis led the Rebels with 25 points as guard, while Kyle Zimmermann's strong first-half performance led him to finish with 15 points and Jasper Duberry to end with 12 points. They and their teammates found an early comfort zone behind the three-point line, making five in the first half alone.

Get A Look At The Elks

 Elk River 64 - Monticello 33
(December 17, 2009)

Ty Video Productions presents its first boys game of the season as Monticello pays a visit to Elk River in their annual rivalry series. Mike Peden and Mike Zamacona bring you the action from your local sports leader in the Twin Cities!

Up Next Elk River

The Rebels (10-4) take on the Elks (10-3) at home on Tuesday January 26th for the first time this season.

The Elks are led by junior Ben Erickson who is averaging 12 points a game and like the Rebels, play mostly seniors. The Elks started drawing some attention early in the season when they blew out Anoka 90-56. The Elks defeated (4-2 in the conference) Coon Rapids 80-55 last week as we all know Coon Rapids upset the Rebels a couple of weeks ago, however, they did lose to Park Center last week. The Elks started the season doing whole sale changes (five in five out) but have now changed that strategy.

The Rebels, who are 5-1 and in a three way tie in the conference for first place, need this game to keep pace with conference leaders Anoka and Osseo who face each other in Anoka on Friday. Our Rebels, who are averaging 72 points a game, are on a three game winning streak (Brandon Davis had a season high 19 points Friday at Centennial) and have won 9 of their last 11 games.

Tip off at the field house is 7pm.

CP 72 - Centennial 65

The Rebels start this one by over passing and have a number of unforced turnovers that lead to easy transition baskets for the Cougars as they take a quick 6 point lead. The Rebels settle down and go on a couple of runs sandwiched around some Davis (pictured) 3 pointers to take a half time lead of 38-31.

The Rebels take care of the ball the 2nd half and build a couple double digit leads that Centennial cut to single digits but don’t have enough to get close until a couple minutes left when they get it to 6. Hager (who started again for Williamson) knocks down a couple of free throws and Centennial misses on three straight possessions as the Rebel close it out.

The Rebels were able to hold Nathan Kuck to 9 points as his shots were not following and Sarvela was limited to 9 points as well. The Cougars were led by Jeff Burns' 12 points.

Great shot selection, passing and shooting from the Rebels as Zimmermann and Davis knock down a number of 3’s. Davis (season high 19 points) who is becoming more comfortable on the wing shot very well and you can see his confidence growing as Zimmermann was Zimmermann (a 15 and 13 double double) around the basket. Duberry (pictured) who scored 12 points probably had one of his better games of the season from a point guard stand point as he continually set up teammates (4 assists) and got the right player the ball in good scoring positions.

The Rebels who are now in a 3 team tie for the conference lead with Anoka and Osseo, pushed their winning streak to 3 and have won 9 of their 11 last games as their next three games are at home.

Up Next Centennial

The Rebels (9-4) fresh off their big win over Osseo Tuesday night take their 2 game winning streak to Centennial on Friday night to take on the Cougars (5-8). The Rebels have won 8 of their last 10 games. The Cougars were upset by Maple Grove Tuesday night as the Crimson got their 1st conference win of the season.

The Cougars who are on a 2 game losing streak are led by sharp shooter Nathan Kuck (15 ppg) and the versatile hard working forward Brian Sarvela (13 ppg).

The Rebels who defeated the Cougars 67-65 in the championship game of the Olive Garden Holiday Tournament in December at Bethel College have split conference games with the Cougars the last two years with the home team winning each game. The Rebels who are averaging 71 points a game have four players averaging double digits.

Tipoff is 7pm.

Osseo Falls to Champlin Park

The Osseo Orioles watched a 40-game home-winning streak end as they were defeated by the Champlin Park Rebels, 61-53. The Rebels led at half-time 34-24 and the Orioles could never competely close the gap in the second half.
Osseo pulled within four points with six minutes remaining, but Champlin Park was able to hold the Orioles off. Head coach Tim Theisen commented, "Champlin is a tough physical team. You never want to lose on your home court where you practice everyday and where your fans are; it was a tough loss. I know are kids will learn from the game and work hard to improve and that is what we ask as coaches."

Rebels end Osseo's home streak, 61-53

BY NICK CLARK - SUN NEWSPAPERS
Published: Thursday, January 21, 2010 2:59 PM CST

The scoreboard didn't malfunction, which was a legitimate concern inside Osseo High School Tuesday, Jan. 18.

It had been nearly four years since the visiting side had outscored the Orioles in a boys basketball game, a streak that reached 40 games after Osseo beat Duluth East by six the previous Saturday.

But Tuesday it ended, as Champlin Park handed fifth-ranked Osseo its first home loss since a March of 2006 with a 61-53 Northwest Suburban Conference victory.

"We talked about it all week," said Champlin Park head coach Mark Tuchscherer. "We wanted to be the team that ended their streak, and the boys came through."

Seniors Josh Pella and Kyle Zimmerman delivered the collective knockout blow, combing for 26 points and 24 rebounds.

CP 61 - Osseo 53

The Rebels End Osseo's Home Streak

The Rebels headed into the Orioles nest with the possibility of being the conference leader’s 41st home victory victims. The Orioles were riding a four year 40 game winning streak and had defeated the Rebels at least twice a season for the last five years.

To the game we go. First obvious thing you notice is that the Rebels have replaced post player D’Andre Williamson in the starting lineup with off guard Dillon Hager (pictured). Osseo who doesn’t possess a large front line, make this CP move look like a strategic one and not as big as it looks until Hager knocks down a 3 pointer for the Rebels first points of the game.

The Rebels and Orioles continually trade baskets until CP’s Jordan Reibling knocks down a 3 pointer and Zimmermann gets a basket to push the Rebels to their largest lead before the Orioles John Rowland knocks down a 3 to get Osseo within four points at 20-16 with ten minutes left in the half.

After a number of questionable fouls on both teams, we are at 22-17 CP with 7 minutes left as both teams struggle to figure out the officiating. Pella attacks the basket and is fouled; he makes 1 of 2 for a CP 25-18 lead with 5 minutes to go. Duberry with a long cross court pass to Davis who knocks down a 3 which is answered with a quick foul on Anderson who knocks down both throws with 2 minutes left. Hager with a floater at the buzzer and the Rebels have their largest lead of the game to end the 1st half 34-24.

All season long half times have been the most interesting times for the Rebels as they have held the lead in every game that they have lost this year. This one gets a new twist as the Orioles don’t return early enough to warm up and just take the court to start the 2nd half.

The Orioles increase their defensive intensity and quickly force the Rebels into forced and unforced turnovers. The teams trade baskets as it seems the Rebels get a couple of questionable calls. The Orioles pound the glass for a couple of put backs and go on a 8-4 run to close the CP lead to 38-32 with 13 minutes left, timeout CP.

The Rebels settle down after the timeout, come back in a 2-3 zone and get baskets from Zimmermann, Pella and Duberry for a CP 45-38 lead with 8 minutes left as Anderson is surprisingly called for a charge at half court. The Rebels miss a number of shots but continue to get rebounds until they score on a Davis 3 pointer, 48-42 with 6 minutes to go. The Orioles struggle to make shots from the perimeter and twice had two possessions in which they passed the ball around for close to 2 minutes trying to find a shot. And did not convert on either possession.

Pella and Zimmermann baskets pushes the lead to 54-44 with 3 minutes left, timeout Osseo. The Rebels keep missing shots but keep coming up with rebounds as they out hustle the Orioles for loose balls and the only difference over the next 2 minutes is a Rebel free throw, 55-44 CP with 1 minute left and it looks like this one is over.

Pella (pictured) led the Rebels with 15 points to bring Osseo’s 40 game home winning streak to an end. This incredible home winning streak started back in the 2006 season. More importantly is that the Rebels moved into a 1st place conference tie with the Orioles.

The Box:
Duberry 3
Davis 9
Hager 8
Pella 15
Reibling 8
Walker 5
Zimmerman 13

Osseo: Rowland 11, Anderson 10, McMorris 8, Bailey 3, Bervin 8, Sonnenfeld 7, Theisen 6.
Of Note:

  • Rebels don't blow half time lead and hang on to win

  • Williamson replaced in the starting line up with Hager and plays limited minutes
  • Rebels 2nd half defense
  • Rebel hustle, focus and hard play
  •

  • Oriole perimeter shooting

Up Next Osseo

The Rebels hit the road on Tuesday to take on cross town powerhouse Osseo for a big NWSC game. The Orioles, who are 4-0 and the only undefeated team left in the conference, look to continue their five year dominance over the Rebels who are 3-1 in the conference.

The Orioles are led by senior point guard Aaron Anderson (13 points game & pictured) and forward John Rowland (12 points a game). The Orioles currently have four players scoring in double digits a game. The Orioles also feature 8th grader Ian Theisen who has played in all 12 of the Orioles games and is averaging 4 points a game. The Orioles defeated Duluth East 70-64 Saturday in a nonconference game to push their current winning streak to six games.

The Rebels bounced back from their disappointing lost last Tuesday at Coon Rapids to throttle Blaine 61-39 at home last Thursday night as Brandon Davis knocked down four 3 pointers to finish with 15 points.

Tip off is 7pm.

Davis's Threes Get The Rebels Back On Track

The Rebels come out poised and look like they are ready to bring their 2 game losing streak to an end. The Rebels spread the floor and move the ball very well as all five starters score as Davis knocks down a couple of 3’s. Blaine’s junior post player Zach Romashko is pretty much unstoppable as his play around the basket and two 3 pointers from sophomore Duke Anywanu keeps Blaine close, 28-22 Rebels at the half.

The Rebels step up their defensive pressure the 2nd half and go on a couple of runs that force Blaine timeouts. Davis knocks down a couple more 3’s (4 for 5 for the game) and the route is on. The Rebels looked very efficient and focused as four starters hit double digits.

Up Next Blaine

After a road conference lost to Coon Rapids in OT on Tuesday, the Rebels are back home to play the Blaine Bengals and will be trying to snap a two game losing streak.

The Bengals (3-7) are led by junior Zach Romashko who is averaging 20 points a game along with senior guard Jesse Briggity’s 14 points a game.

The Bengals, who defeated Coon Rapids 57-43 on January 8th, make this an interesting game.

Hopkins rallies past Champlin Park at Timberwolves Shootout

Losses of any kind have been rare for the Hopkins boys basketball program for the past few years. After losing to Minneapolis North Friday, the Royals needed a rally to avoid making it two losses in a row on back-to-back days.

A good Champlin Park team took a 10-point lead into halftime of their matchup with Hopkins in the Timberwolves Shootout at Target Center.

Hopkins responded with a 26-4 run to start the second half and ultimately pulled out a 74-69 win over the Rebels.

Joe Coleman led Hopkins with 24 points, while Marvin Singleton added 20.

Jasper Duberry scored 17 and Josh Pella scored 14 for Champlin Park.

CP 80 - Coon Rapids 85 in OT

It’s one thing to go into the locker room with a 10 point lead over the #1 team in the state and eventually lose to the master mind of Kenny Novak and the empire called Hopkins Basketball, but to take a 5 point lead into the locker room against one of the lower teams in your conference and lose … its time to look in the mirror.

The Rebels, who have been trying to right the ship since their 3rd game of the season, and seemed to somewhat had, hit an all time season low last night and don’t look for them to recover anytime soon.

The Rebels, who was in every publications top ten, are simply look like an under achieving and over ranked team. They showed again last night in the words of a Budlight commercial, “they aren’t who we thought they were”.

We last saw this the other night as Hopkins came out of the locker room at the half and went on a 24-6 run to take the game over. Before that we saw it in the Park Center game with 9 minutes left with the Rebels up 18 points. Five minutes later, the Rebel’s lead was nine; however they were able to recover.

Tonight, the Rebels raced out to a quick a lead and instead of letting the core group that built the lead stay on the floor and build a lead and put the game further away, the mind boggling substitutions start. This, of course, puts the Rebels in and out of a hole and eventually gives the Cardinals the momemtum they need.

The Rebels were up 38-33 at halftime.

The Rebels finally go up ten points again in the 2nd half and guess what, you got it; the mind boggling substitutions start again. Granted the Rebels had a few times to overcome this, how many times can you consistently put your team in a situation to fail?

Torren Dowdy made a running 15 foot jumper as time expired in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 75. The Rebels give ANOTHER game a way and fall to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The Box:
Davis 9
Duberry 3
Gibson 2
Okafor 4
Pella 28
Reibling 16
Walker 3
Williamson 8
Zimmerman 7

Game note:
Coon Rapids senior forward Aaron Lukitsch, who was averaging 5 points a game, scored 34 points. He made six 3 pointers (one in overtime).

Boys' hoops: CR had a high-flying moment indeed

Ryan Green is the first-year head coach of the Coon Rapids boys' basketball team. But, following his team's 85-80 overtime upset of Champlin Park Jan. 12, he must have felt like a kid, who recently discovered an additional gadget for his latest toy.
It must seem like a whole new world opened up with the victory.

2010 TWolves Shootout Thoughts

Here are my thoughts from the 2010 TWolves Shootout
Game 6: #1AAAA Hopkins vs #8AAAA Champlin Park

This one to me had blowout written all over it with Hopkins losing at North on Friday. But as I was doing podcast for the 1st half of this one I see Brandon Davis knock down back to back triples from Jasper Duberry to force 1 Hopkins timeout down 11. Then its 33-19 Champlin Park with 2:57 left in the first half. Duberry for 3 at the first half buzzer and Champlin Park is up 10. DJ Peterson with 3 quick fouls and sits for a large part of the half. Hopkins went deep into the bench with a couple of guys (Selmer, Martin) who normally aren't in the rotation.

2nd half Hopkins awakens with pressure defense and ice cold Champlin Park shooting. A 26-4 Hopkins run over the 1st 9:10 of the second half puts the Royals up 54-42 with 9:50 left. Joe Coleman with a 3 and 2 old-fashioned 3 point plays on not smart fouls during the run. The lead stays at 10-12 points and it looks like Hopkins will just cruise. But its not quite over. Duberry a pair of freebies at 3:16, Coleman misses 2 freebies, Brandon Davis 2 freebies, DJ Peterson misses a front end, Josh Pella with a tip. A tieup goes to Champlin Park and Pella tips in a miss and gets fouled for a 3 point play. All of a sudden its 70-67 Hopkins with 1:09 left. But Siyani Chambers makes 4 big free throws to put this one away. 74-69 Hopkins wins. Joe Coleman with 24 points and a pair of 3s during the game. Nice to see him shoot the ball better. Marvin Singleton 20 points as there wasn't a good answer for him inside. Jasper Duberry leads Champlin Park with 17 points. Jordan Reibling with 11 points off the Rebels bench as he was 1 of 5 Rebels in double figures.

Rebels roll then wilt in shootout meeting with Hopkins

BY NICK CLARK - SUN NEWSPAPERS
(Created: Sunday, January 10, 2010 12:05 PM CST)

For 18 minutes of basketball inside the what is the mecca of hoops facilities in Minnesota, Champlin Park had the most decorated high school basketball program in the state situated firmly on the ropes.

Then, almost in one decisive motion, the Rebels were cold-clocked right out of downtown Minneapolis.

Champlin Park built a first half lead that, at one point, reached 14 points in its 2010 Timberwolves Shootout match-up with the defending state champs from Hopkins. The lead was 10 at the break, and back to 12 after the first possession of the second half.

But before the Rebels would score again, Hopkins netted 16 points to begin a run in which the Royals would outscore Champlin Park 30-6 in a game that would go to Hopkins by a final count of 74-69.

(Brandon Davis pictured)

It was quick, it was decisive, and it was precisely why the Royals have won four state championships in the past eight years.

Hopkins Rallies to Defeat Champlain Park

Hopkins Rallies to Defeat Champlain Park: "Hopkins rallied from a 33-19 first half deficit to defeat Champlain Park 74-69 in the final game of the Timberwolves Shootout. The Royals snapped a two-game losing streak, their longest in more than six years"

Hopkins and Champlin Park were playing an even straight up contest until the Rebels began raining threes. First Concordia-Moorhead committed Jordan Reibling nailed a triple then surprising Brandon Davis nailed a pair of threes and Champlin Park took a 28-17 lead. The lead was built to 14 points when Jasper Duberry hit a pull-up triple with Siyani Chambers in his face.

Hopkins closed the gap when they turned the heat up on the defensive end. Buckets in transition from Riley Dearring, Joe Coleman, and Siyani Chambers brought Hopkins within five in the final minute. However, the Royals seemed to get a little comfortable after closing the gap and the Rebel experience took advantage on a driving score from Josh Pella and another three from Duberry.
Hopkins tied the game at 40 on the broad shoulders of Coleman and Marvin Singleton in the second half. Joe made his second triple of the game and had a three point play the hard way attacking the cup, taking the foul, and then hanging to finish. In addition, Singleton exploded from the elbow to the hoop for a score and his rebounding cleared all the Rebel misses.

Game # 6 (8:00pm) Champlin Park vs. Hopkins

The sixth and final game of the night featured two teams that look poised for a state championship. The experienced Champlin Park Rebels faced off against a relatively young Hopkins Royals. The Royals were able to squeak by the Rebels by a score of 74 - 69

The first half was dominated by the Rebels, who connected on six three point buckets while the Royals struggled from beyond the arc, and were only able to make one on seven attempts. Senior guard Jasper Duberry led the charge with 12 first half points, including two three pointers. The Royals shot just 62.8% (5-8) from the charity stripe that led to their first half deficit.

The second half was nothing like the first half as the Royals stormed back from a 10-point deficit and went on 14-2 run. They were able to take the lead early in the second half and hold on to that lead thanks to their swarming defense. The Rebels committed 6 turnovers in the second half.

Though they brought it within three points, for the most part the Rebels were dominated on both sides of the ball in the second half. They shot an abysmal 34.3% (24-70) and went 6-24 behind the three-point line.

The Royals were led by the stellar performance from Joe Coleman who had 24 pts scoring 15 in the second half. His impeccable second half was key in the Royals victory. Marvin Singleton also had a good game and was the only player to record a double-double, putting up 20 pts and 11 boards. DJ Peterson and Jeremiah Tolbert also scored in 10 points each.

Even in the loss the Rebels had a many players with good games. Jasper Duberry led the Rebels with 17 points and two steals. All in all the Rebels had five players in double digits including Josh Pella with 14, Brandon Davis with 13, Kyle Zimmerman with 12 and Jordan Reibling with 11.

The Royals improved to 8-1 on the year, going an impressive 39-1 in their last 40 games. The Rebels fall to 5-3, but look to rebound with a strong showing here tonight.

Watching Others

Anoka 81 –  Centennial 66

Went to see if the Anoka Tornadoes are as good as they say. Was skeptical about going after seeing that Elk River blew them out the other night 96-50 at the Target Center. See a few NWSC coaches in the gym; Osseo, Maple Grove, Andover, Elk River and Blaine. A few local D3 coaches as well.

Anyway on to the game … Anoka jumps out early as Centennial is able to get back into the game before the half and cut the score to 31-28 at the half. Centennial doesn’t have anyone who can play Anoka’s post player Lomumba Ismail as he has his way in the lane and is on his way to a big game. Gerding who I believe must have missed his first 5-8 shots scores about 7 to close out the first half.

Second half gets going at a much faster paste as Anoka continues to feed Ismail in the paint as Centennial’s jump shots start to fall. Enter Anoka sophomore Marcus Tyson who had 6 points in the 1st half off the bench. I think he might have been the 2nd guard off the bench but you couldn’t tell it as he starts hitting jump shots and then going to the basket on 1 or 2 Cougars at a time with ease and scoring. The Tornadoes start to pull away as the Cougars missed bunny after bunny after bunny. Anoka guards continued to drive the baseline and then bounce pass to Ismail in the lane for baskets or fouls. The only thing that kept the Cougars in striking range was Ismail missing free throws and the play of Cougar Brian Sarvela. Sarvela, who is clearly Centennial’s best player and a hard worker, at one point went on an 8-0 run by himself. I think he defers too much to the Cougar’s Gerding which will probably change as the season goes on. What was also very noticeable was the ease that the Anoka wings (Sherva and Gave) had getting to the basket off the elbows when Tyus wasn’t sprinting by them for baskets.

Back to Anoka’s Tyus. He has to be one of the best sophomores in the conference and maybe in the state. He plays with a great calmness and confidence that you usually see in a senior. He can hit the 3 and get to the basket and finish as his 21 second half points illustrated. His best play of the game was when he was in the lane on an Anoka free throw. While getting boxed out he grabbed the rebound with one hand and attempted a shot while being pushed to the floor by a Centennial player. Look for him to be in the Anoka starting line up before the end of the season as he is more athletic and versatile than the guards that are currently starting in front of him.

The Rebels play the Tornadoes for the first time this season at home February 23rd.

Centennial: Orth 4, Burns 16, Kuck 14, Malinowski 6, Sarvela 13, Gerding 10, Melby 3.

Anoka: Mooers 6, Tyus 27, Johanson 2, Ismail 19, Sherva 10, Gave 12, Jordan 5.

Up Next Maple Grove

The Rebels return home after a seven game road trip for their 2nd conference game of the season as they take on the Maple Grove Crimson on Friday January 8th at 7pm.

The Crimson who are 2-6 and on a two game losing streak are led by senior post player Jordan Harrell who is averaging 14 points a game. Brycen Wojta, who is a talented freshman, is their second leading scorer at 7 points a game. Look for the Crimson to try and make this a physical game.

The Rebels whose starting 5 is averaging 60 points a game, are on a five game winning streak and have a 6-2 record.

Timberwolves ShootOut Preview

Ryan James
MinnesotaPreps.com Senior Writer

The 13th annual Timberwolves Shootout has gone more with a local flavor compared to the headlining national stars that have been played against Minnesota's elite in the past. Paul Bunch from Lawndale Prep in Illinois and Marcus Paige of Linn Mar are nothing to sneeze at but the majority of the talent in this year's event will come from the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

When it comes to size and depth the match-up between Hopkins (7-1) and Champlin Park (5-2) looks somewhat even. Hopkins has more athletic ability but Champlin Park will still make this a competitive match-up.

Point guard wise both Jasper Duberry (11.1 points per game) of CP and Siyani Chambers (7.4 ppg) of Hopkins are six feet and strong players. On the wing D.J. Peterson (10.8 ppg) of the Royals and Josh Pella (12.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and for assists a game) of the Rebels are versatile talents in the 6-foot-4 range (give or take an inch each way) that put up a ton of numbers across the board. Inside both teams will use undersized forwards at 6-foot-4 in Kyle Zimmerman (15.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg) and Marvin Singleton (19.9 ppg for Hopkins). Zimmerman is your typical lunch pail guy who can also take his defender out to the arc while Marvin is very athletic with one of the stronger physiques in the metro. But what will the Rebels try and do with Joe Coleman who is scoring 26.5 points per contest for Hopkins? The Champlin Park counters aren't too bad in seniors Brandon Davis (11.6 ppg) and D'Andre Williamson (8.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg). Both teams will have depth in the form of decent shooters, some younger athletes, and have the option to use some 6-foot-7 size off the bench but that size is quite raw.

Duberry Shows He’s Back

CP 78 – Park Center 61

After losing two interesting non-conference games which included a 16 day layoff and winning the Olive Garden Holiday Tournament, the Rebels start conference play. During the Bethel Holiday tournament, Duberry took a couple of hard hits in the Washburn semi-final game that limited him to sparse minutes and 4 points in the following championship game against Centennial. During the Rebels route of White Bear Lake on Saturday he was 2 for 10, scored 4 points and played sparingly again.

Tonight, Duberry looks fully recovered as he starts the Park Center game with two 3 pointers and scores 6 of the Rebels first 10 points as Justin Casey (12 points) is hard to handle inside and the score is 10-10. The teams traded baskets as Casey’s put back gives the Pirates their first lead at 19-17. The Rebels take the lead back on a Pella 3 point play, the teams trade baskets as Zimmermann makes 2 free throws and CP takes the lead for good, at 24-21.

Casey and Vanpelt both pick up their 2nd fouls as the Rebels close the half on a 17-8 run shooting a number of free throws. Walker comes off the bench for 6 points as Pella adds 7 points in the run, CP 34-27 at the half.

The 2nd half starts with CP in a 1-3-1 zone as PC’s Deric Paine knocks down a 3 that’s answered by Duberry with a short shot, 36-30 CP. Duberry (pictured) breaks out and attempts to throw down a dunk that doesn’t go down, Paine answers with another 3. Casey picks up his 3rd foul but then scores on Zimmermann to close PC to 36-35. Casey then picks up his 4th foul on a rebound and goes to the bench. Davis makes 1 of the 2 free throws, Pella and Zimmermann both add a basket, 41-35 CP as Park Center calls a timeout with 14 minutes left. After the timeout, Reibling hits a 3 in transition and Pella knocks down another 3, 47-38 CP, 11 minutes to go.

The Pirates go into a full court press as CP breaks it with ease as Duberry knocks down a 3, Reibling gets a put back 52-40 CP with 9 minutes left and it looks like CP is about to break the game open. Duberry and Zimmermann score on break outs to push CP to a 57-40 lead, timeout Park Center with 8 minutes left.

Park Center returns with Casey in the lineup as they realize it’s now or never for them. Davis gets a steal and then Casey tries to guard him on the next possession at half court and picks up his 5th foul, Davis makes both free throws 59-40. The Rebels substitute the entire starting 5 as they think this one is over.

Vanpelt for a 3 point play as PC freshman Quinton Hooker makes 1 of 2 free throws twice, 59-45 CP with 6 minutes left and CP looks unorganized. Vanpelt attacks the basket and is fouled as Williamson picks up his 4th foul, he makes 1 of 2. Paine with an offensive rebound and foul, he makes both, CP 59-49 as Duberry and Zimmermann return with 5 minutes left. Zimmermann to the basket for a 3 point play to end the Pirates 9-0 run as he adds 1 of 2 more free throws, CP 63-49.

Pella leaks out for a 3 point play, Duberry with a layup and Pella with another basket, 72-56 CP with a minute left when the fireworks go off. The Pirates Brian Blackhawk misses a short shot when Bryan Asberry grabs the rebound with one hand while in mid air and TOMOHAWKS a dunk while being fouled as the Pirate fans go crazy. This has to be a Sport Center Top Play. The Rebels add a couple more free throws and Pella gets a break out dunk with 16 seconds left in which the Pirates answer with another dunk by Ansberry off of a missed shot.

In the end it looked like Duberry and Pella where to strong for the Pirates. Pella was a nightmare match up because he was to too big and strong for the PC wings to cover and too quick for their forwards. Duberry’s confident leadership and ability to know when to do what kept the PC guards a step behind which took away their ball pressure and athleticism. It was good to see Okafor on the floor as he showed his strength around the basket. Walker (pictured), who has shown no existence on the offensive end until last night, gave the Rebels another option and a great boost off the bench with his play.

The Box:

Davis 8
Duberry 18
Hager 2
Okafor 2
Pella 21
Reibling 8
Walker 9
Williamson 2
Zimmerman 8

Off Note:
  • Walker scores a career high 9 points
  • Okafor plays meaningful minutes after Williamson & Sandstad get in foul trouble
  • Williamson’s questionable shot selection
  • Duberry looks to be back to 100%
  • Pella with another all around solid performance
  • Hopkins head coach Kenny Novak
  • Great PC home crowd and team support for our cross town rival
  • Rebels extend their winning streak to 5

Elks Making Early Season Interesting

Elk River cracked this weeks MN Preps top 10 list at #9. The Rebels play the Elks at home on January 26th.

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Up Next Park Center

The Rebels open conference play and continue their six game road trip with a stop at Park Center on Tuesday January 5th.

The Pirates (5-2) have been the talk of the conference with their early season non-conference game performances so far this year which includes a win at Columbia Heights. The Pirates who have three players averaging in double digits, are led in the middle by Sr. center Justin Casey (pictured) who is averaging 12 points a game and will give the Rebels all kinds of problems in the paint. Also look for their leading scorer junior point guard Terez Vanpelt (lower picture) to create in the open court. The streaky Pirates will be one a few teams this year that will have the ability to match the Rebels athleticism.

The Rebels are on a four game winning streak and have a 5-2 record. Tip off time is 7pm.
